I dont understand any of this Tracy Morgan stuff. He’s a stand up comedian! Some stand ups have always done this kinda stuff. Some see it as part of their job. Why does he keep apologising for it? None of his contemporaries or ‘controversial’ comedians that went before him ever apologised. We never really expected them to. Why is this guy getting treated differently? I mean, dont get me wrong, its not MY type of comedy. I think its trash. But Ive always been aware that there are comedians that do close to the knuckle stuff, or even downright offensive stuff. But then America as a country is generally and historically socially very unaware (odd given how diverse its population is).

I made reference in a previous Tracy Morgan post… PR teams can help change your image! “But you have to want to change!” Tracy Morgan may publicly appear to want to change “but does he?” being the lose canon he is we can only hope he will blow his career apart… the sooner the better. On the brighter side hopefully his negative rants have provoked peoples thoughts about their own conduct and they will want personal change, after all examples of what we don’t want to be is guided by our consciences.

Mocking people with disabilities seems to be a serious problem in American media. Stuff that would get shows cancelled in Britain gets a free pass over in America and I can’t figure out why. They usually treat discrimination the same way we do (except anything to do with LGBTs, thanks to the large amount of religious fundamentalism over there), yet ableism is frequently tolerated. When even a country’s leader gets caught using the term “retarded” (seriously, Obama said that on The Tonight Show a few years back), you know there’s some issues that need to be tackled.

There continues to be an acceptance to attack the more vunerable in society, the easy targets but with the US I do think it’s a case of can dish it out but can’t take it when given back.

If he thinks he can just shift his focus to whoever he thinks he can get away with demeaning next, because maybe they don’t have as strong a lobby as his previous victims, he’s totally wrong. Watch for petitions demanding that 30 Rock fire him and jump on board. This man has clearly not learned his lesson. He is a bigot and a hypocrit. Being a comedian is not a blank check, freeing you from responsiblity or accountability.
I think a huge difference is being missed here. I never had a problem with comedians making fun of people, all people. Heck Don Rickles is one of the best. And that is what Tracy is doing here. If before he had been just making jokes about gay people, fine. But he was not, he was making a commentary how horrible they were and the basic threats towards an imaginary scenario about what he would do to a gay son. Not comedy.
