Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies has launched an outspoken attack on David Cameron and Nick Clegg over spending cuts to the BBC.

Davies, who is one of the BBC’s most senior writers, called the leaders “savage and evil people” and claimed the Conservative Party was “buffoonish” but “lethal as a laser”.

The gay screenwriter, known for Queer as Folk, Torchwood and relaunching Doctor Who, was speaking on Radio 4 today about the effect of spending cuts on the corporation.

Referring to the coalition leaders’ visit to a hospital last week, Davies said: “That Clegg and Cameron photo opportunity, at the bed, ‘oh, we’re all laughing’ – they are savage and evil people underneath it all.

“There is a great intelligence behind the Tory party that says let’s appear slightly bumbling and slightly buffoonish, while they are lethal as a laser underneath it all,” he added.

Davies also claimed that the BBC would face more cuts and that the 9pm watershed was more “stringent” than ever.

His remarks came as Torchwood star John Barrowman revealed that the new series would be the sexiest yet, with “man sex” and “full-on” nudity.

Davies has attacked the Tories over BBC spending before. In 2009, he claimed that the party, if it won power, would “dismantle it slowly”.

He said: “To them it’s a tax and they want to get rid of it.

“They’ll freeze the licence fee and persuade Daily Mail readers it’s the right thing to do by saying they’re getting rid of all those digital channels they don’t watch, that’s the language they’ll use.”
