US activists have ‘glittered’ another politician accused of being against gay rights.

Tim Pawlenty, the former governor of Minnesota and a 2012 presidential hopeful, was targeted as he held a book signing in San Francisco yesterday.

As Mr Pawlenty signed copies of his memoir, Courage to Stand, Nancy Mancias and Chelsea Byers began shouting and dumped the confetti on his table.

The pair, from liberal group Code Pink, shouted: “Where’s your courage to stand for gay rights and women’s reproductive rights?”

As police officers quickly ushered them away, Ms Mancias shouted: “Welcome to San Francisco, home of gay hero Harvey Milk. Where’s your courage to stand?”

Earlier this year, Mr Pawlenty said he would support reinstating the ban on openly gay troops.

He also opposes abortion except in cases of rape or incest or where the mother’s life is in danger.

In May, fellow presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich received a ‘glittering’ for his support of gay marriage bans.

Ambushing the Republican at a book signing, protester Nick Espinosa tipped a box of rainbow glitter over his head and told him to “stop the hate”.

Last year, Mr Espinosa targeted Republican gubernational candidate Tom Emner for his views on immigration. Mr Emner, who stood for Minnesota, had 2,000 pennies poured over him.

Speaking about yesterday’s glittering, Ms Mancias told the Bay Citizen: “We were inspired by Nick Espinosa and did the same to Tim Pawlenty. Some of these people are so hard to reach, we have to use this to get our message out, confronting them in this fashion.”

On the use of glitter, she added: “It’s non-violent and it looks great. It’s just disarming. How can you be mad at anybody who throws glitter?”
