The newly elected Scottish Government, led by Alex Salmond’s Scottish National Party, have said they will begin a consultation on same-sex marriage.

In the party’s election manifesto from last month, they promised consultation on full marriage equality.

According to Scottish-based charity the Equality Network, not long after the newly elected Parliament convened, Green MSP Patrick Harvie asked the Scottish Government about their plans for this consultation.

Nicola Sturgeon, deputy leader and minister responsible for equality, said: “We recognise the range of views on same-sex marriage and registration of civil partnerships. We will therefore begin a process of consultation and discussion of these issues as soon as practicable.”

A promise to consult was also in the Labour Party’s manifesto, and the Greens and Liberal Democrats promised to introduce equal marriage.

The Equality Network said: “We expect the consultation to be broadly supported across the Parliament.”
