President Obama has declared June to be national Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month in the USA.

In a White House press release that highlights his administration’s achievements in terms of gay rights, the President states: “Each June, we commemorate the courageous individuals who have fought for LGBT Americans, and we rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

The press release also lists progress on LGBT rights in the US and abroad, including the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and the country’s dedication to pressing the United Nations to ensure LGBT are treated fairly internationally.

President Obama also mentioned how it is now illegal for hospitals to discriminate against gay and lesbian partners when making hospital visits.

The press release ends: “I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people.”
