No, Lyla, it doesn’t. In some states, domestic partnerships are available to both orientations, but not civil unions that are reserved only for gay couples, the same situation as civil partnerships in our own country.
It is a step forward but until there is true equality of all types of union for all people regardless of the type of relationship then there is still a very long way to go. Welcome step forward and significant to the couples involved.
But there is not, so I understand, yet cross-state recognition of civil unions contracted in another state. So the law will continue to be a mess. It’s going to take Federal law to sort it out.
