“…gay and straight couples are flocking to the Cook County Clerk’s downtown office of records to acquire the state’s first civil union licenses.” So does that mean Straight couples can also get them?
If so, it’s about time!
No, Lyla, it doesn’t. In some states, domestic partnerships are available to both orientations, but not civil unions that are reserved only for gay couples, the same situation as civil partnerships in our own country.
A positive step forward but a way to go yet.
It is a step forward but until there is true equality of all types of union for all people regardless of the type of relationship then there is still a very long way to go. Welcome step forward and significant to the couples involved.
Congratulations to everyone today – its a great step forward and I wish all couples a fantastic day
But there is not, so I understand, yet cross-state recognition of civil unions contracted in another state. So the law will continue to be a mess. It’s going to take Federal law to sort it out.
DOMA has got to be abolished as the first step to sorting it out.
I LOVE Chicago! :o)
I have lots of friends who live there who will be loving this new step forward
Hawaii and Dalaware civil union law comes effective from 1.1.2012 pinknews!!!!!!!
