This study may not be news to us, but it will be news to many conservatives in the U.S.

It is obvious to gay people and to those who love us that bigotry destroys young lives, not being gay. But many anti-gay groups argue the opposite and are too often believed. Sound scientific work is the only way to prove that homophobia = dead children.

Research will help to persuade the many U.S. conservatives who are not confirmed anti-gay activists, and who are willing to listen to alternative points of view. And as we saw with Louis Marinelli of NOM, sometimes even the most vigorous campaigners against equality come to understand that their actions affect real people.

Before this fight is over, we will have to prove many, many more times that homophobia kills.

It’s hardly pointless if it highlights why these young people (Or anyone) who feel pressured into commiting suicide.

This is not something that must be silenced.

Whilst I question if research needs to be done to find out suicides are higher among Gay teenagers in areas considered less liberal, it is still a very sad subject.

Shocking that most are because of bullying as a result from religious people and/or backgrounds.

The question now is what are those powers that be in those said areas going to do about it?

They are going to continue being Christians and celebrate the death of children. The rate of suicide is higher for both gay and straight kids. Republicans suck.

Wow this website is one of the most hate filled web sites on the net. You gays spew the same venom that you accuse religious people of demonstrating. I don’t know any Christians, that would be pleased to know, that a young person struggling with homosexuality, killed themselves. i love all my brothers and sisters of the world, but I don’t have to accept their ideology and life styles. You don’t accept my belief’s so who are you to judge? You can’t have it both ways!

  4. The fact that 1 in 4 teenagers attempts suicide in ‘conservative’ areas of the U.S. is shocking. However, I found it equally shocking that 1 in 5 gay teenagers attempt to kill themselves in so-called ‘liberal’ areas. It would appear to indicate that homophobia is endemic in America.

Perhaps if you had Googled for “Mark Hatzenbuehler” + “Columbia University” (as I did) you’d have seen the dozens of reports of this particular study. As well, he participated in a December 2010 on LGBT mental health problems, and a 2009 study on obesity.
He’s a Yale graduate, etc . . . oh, and the study is “TO BE PUBLISHED IN AN UPCOMING ISSUE of ‘Pediatrics.”.
Box Turtle Bulletin article has clearer details:
        http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/2011/04/18/31915
And “Pediatrics’ makes clear that this is TO BE PUBLISHED in the MAY issue.

How so many news feeds got this wrong, I do not know.

…..actually paedi or pedi is correct and as both relate to childrens diseases you would be unlikely to find anything realting to gay suicide among teens as the APa does not consider homosexuality a disease. Google returned 470 thousand results related to the study many mentioning Hatzenbuehler by name.??? Perhaps you should have Googled the study itself as i did.

Yet, despite this data, Maggie Gallagher still seems to insist that she is not complicit in Gay teen suicides even though she directly aids in fostering such an oppressive culture in which fascists such as her are legally able to employ their religious beliefs to openly and PUBLICLY discriminate against Gay people (as Brian Browne was recently called out on on MSNBC).

Looks like Jessica Harris is like those idiots who threw paint at the home of a pediatrician, being unable to tell the difference between a pediatrician and a paedophile. Just because PinkNews is a news assembly operation does not release ‘journalists’ from their obligation to sort out essential differences like these.

  12. At least there is evidence in the USA and judging by the news coverage something is likely to be done. The same is happening in Britain but we don’t have the evidence and nothing will be done!

  13. This is another reason why full equality is necessary in our own country. Everytime rags like the Daily Mail make antigay remarks or ridicule gay people for whatever reason, this sends a loud and clear message that its ok to taunt and bully us, and in some cases, kill us. The media is also complicit when it doesn’t take a stand, let alone religious cults and other bigoted homophobes including Melanie Phillips et al.

That other bigoted moron in America, Maggie Gallagher bashes gays wanting to marry and that alone sends another message to homophobes to go out and commit crimes against us, including bullying. She denies that she’s anti-gay to rub salt in the wound.

To digress, apparently in an article I once read on anti ex-gay campaigner Wayne Besen’s website, Truth Wins Out, he reported that in those (red) states where there is no protection for LGBT people, straight pornography is at an all time high. Maybe there’s a correlation somewhere.

Only with full equality can we begin to sort out homophobia effectively.
