  1. In other news, water discovered to be wet.

    1. This study may not be news to us, but it will be news to many conservatives in the U.S.

It is obvious to gay people and to those who love us that bigotry destroys young lives, not being gay. But many anti-gay groups argue the opposite and are too often believed. Sound scientific work is the only way to prove that homophobia = dead children.

Research will help to persuade the many U.S. conservatives who are not confirmed anti-gay activists, and who are willing to listen to alternative points of view. And as we saw with Louis Marinelli of NOM, sometimes even the most vigorous campaigners against equality come to understand that their actions affect real people.

Before this fight is over, we will have to prove many, many more times that homophobia kills.

    2. LOL, you beat me to it!
      What a completely pointless exercise.

      1. Jock S. Trap 19 Apr 2011, 7:58am

It’s hardly pointless if it highlights why these young people (Or anyone) who feel pressured into commiting suicide.

This is not something that must be silenced.

  2. Jock S. Trap 18 Apr 2011, 10:53am

Whilst I question if research needs to be done to find out suicides are higher among Gay teenagers in areas considered less liberal, it is still a very sad subject.

Shocking that most are because of bullying as a result from religious people and/or backgrounds.

The question now is what are those powers that be in those said areas going to do about it?

    1. They are going to continue being Christians and celebrate the death of children. The rate of suicide is higher for both gay and straight kids. Republicans suck.

      1. Wow this website is one of the most hate filled web sites on the net. You gays spew the same venom that you accuse religious people of demonstrating. I don’t know any Christians, that would be pleased to know, that a young person struggling with homosexuality, killed themselves. i love all my brothers and sisters of the world, but I don’t have to accept their ideology and life styles. You don’t accept my belief’s so who are you to judge? You can’t have it both ways!

    2. Nothing.. not only are the gay children vile sinning homosexuals but they have also committed Suicide.. a further sin. Thats why its called ‘committed’ suicide. They committed a sin.

      1. Jock S. Trap 18 Apr 2011, 12:53pm

“not only are the gay children vile sinning homosexuals”

        Please explain?

        1. Paddyswurds 18 Apr 2011, 6:32pm

I think hope he is being ironic…..

      2. Burn them at the stake along with the midwives, single women and anyone who knows anything about herbal medicine –

No, wait, wrong century, sorry, must be flashing back to the dark ages again. Wonder what triggered that…

      3. “not only are the gay children vile sinning homosexuals”

What a truly sick comment to make. People like you should seek help and be separated from civilised society.

      4. These young people commit suicide because people like you go around calling them “vile sinning homosexuals”.
Your words are driving both gays and straights to end their lives because they cannot handle your hate.

Sir, the blood is on your hands.

        1. Oh save it he just doesn’t care, just report that cretin

          1. I know.
You can’t blame me for trying to get through that brainwashed lump of flesh that pretends to be a brain though.

  3. Don Harrison 18 Apr 2011, 12:37pm

    Why am I not surprised?

  4. The fact that 1 in 4 teenagers attempts suicide in ‘conservative’ areas of the U.S. is shocking. However, I found it equally shocking that 1 in 5 gay teenagers attempt to kill themselves in so-called ‘liberal’ areas. It would appear to indicate that homophobia is endemic in America.

  5. Tell me something that i didnt know, what I dont get is a paradox of gay tory i can understand gay and catholic, you know brain washing etc, but gay and tory, how masochistic

  6. ‘The researchers used numbers of Democrats to calculate how liberal an area was.’
Does anyone else find this redolent of dodgy assumptions?

    1. @Riondo – very much so! What a ‘scientific’ study!

    2. Fishy at best. There is nothing at journal Paediatrics (sic – should be: Journal Pediatrics) and a Google of “Mark Hatzenbuehler” returns many hits, but nothing related to this.

      1. Perhaps if you had Googled for “Mark Hatzenbuehler” + “Columbia University” (as I did) you’d have seen the dozens of reports of this particular study. As well, he participated in a December 2010 on LGBT mental health problems, and a 2009 study on obesity.
He’s a Yale graduate, etc . . . oh, and the study is “TO BE PUBLISHED IN AN UPCOMING ISSUE of ‘Pediatrics.”.
Box Turtle Bulletin article has clearer details:
And “Pediatrics’ makes clear that this is TO BE PUBLISHED in the MAY issue.
How so many news feeds got this wrong, I do not know.

      2. Dan Filson 18 Apr 2011, 4:39pm

@pastol Clearly you didn’t Google effectively. Look at:

      3. Paddyswurds 18 Apr 2011, 6:47pm

…..actually paedi or pedi is correct and as both relate to childrens diseases you would be unlikely to find anything realting to gay suicide among teens as the APa does not consider homosexuality a disease. Google returned 470 thousand results related to the study many mentioning Hatzenbuehler by name.??? Perhaps you should have Googled the study itself as i did.

        1. Paddyswurds 18 Apr 2011, 7:33pm

          @journal Pediatrics….
….Read the actual origonal study release here:

          1. ‘paediatrics’ is correct in British English.

            Original, ;P

Whenever you try to correct someone’s spelling on the internet, you will make a spelling mistake. A Rule of the Net

  7. Wade@MacMorrighan.Net 18 Apr 2011, 2:46pm

Yet, despite this data, Maggie Gallagher still seems to insist that she is not complicit in Gay teen suicides even though she directly aids in fostering such an oppressive culture in which fascists such as her are legally able to employ their religious beliefs to openly and PUBLICLY discriminate against Gay people (as Brian Browne was recently called out on on MSNBC).

  8. A recent graphic illustrated each of America’s 50 states with which thing each had “the most” of. Utah (“Mormonland” – from whence came Prop 8 lumbering forth to wreck civil rights in California) led the nation in teen suicides.

  9. And this is a surprise?

  10. Dan Filson 18 Apr 2011, 4:44pm

Looks like Jessica Harris is like those idiots who threw paint at the home of a pediatrician, being unable to tell the difference between a pediatrician and a paedophile. Just because PinkNews is a news assembly operation does not release ‘journalists’ from their obligation to sort out essential differences like these.

  11. Seems like a good study to me. Obvious results to most of us, but proves a point to those who try to claim otherwise.

  12. Jan Bridget 18 Apr 2011, 5:00pm

At least there is evidence in the USA and judging by the news coverage something is likely to be done. The same is happening in Britain but we don’t have the evidence and nothing will be done!

  13. This is another reason why full equality is necessary in our own country. Everytime rags like the Daily Mail make antigay remarks or ridicule gay people for whatever reason, this sends a loud and clear message that its ok to taunt and bully us, and in some cases, kill us. The media is also complicit when it doesn’t take a stand, let alone religious cults and other bigoted homophobes including Melanie Phillips et al.

That other bigoted moron in America, Maggie Gallagher bashes gays wanting to marry and that alone sends another message to homophobes to go out and commit crimes against us, including bullying. She denies that she’s anti-gay to rub salt in the wound.

To digress, apparently in an article I once read on anti ex-gay campaigner Wayne Besen’s website, Truth Wins Out, he reported that in those (red) states where there is no protection for LGBT people, straight pornography is at an all time high. Maybe there’s a correlation somewhere.

    1. Jock S. Trap 19 Apr 2011, 8:01am

Only with full equality can we begin to sort out homophobia effectively.

  14. Paddyswurds 18 Apr 2011, 7:35pm

The study was published online today in journal Pediatrics read it here:

  15. Good news! Let it go higher! To the end!

    1. David Myers 19 Apr 2011, 10:49am

      Folcing Troll! F Off.

  16. Correlation doesn’t equal conclusion. Fools.

  17. I’m sorry but a study was not needed to tell us this. And anyone who did not know this is most likely because they are one of the conservative haters and don’t care that we suffer.
