Football club asks fans to report racist or anti-gay abuse
Football club Tottenham Hotspur has asked all fans at tonight’s match against Real Madrid to report anti-gay or racist language if they hear it.
The club said supporters at White Hart Lane should contact stewards if they hear abuse, or text match control on a special number (07766 553 225).
A club spokesman said: “Foul, abusive, homophobic and racist language will not be tolerated in the stadium, but should you experience any of these and wish to report it, you can do so by texting the Control Room on the above number.
“You do not have to put up with mindless supporters who are intent on ruining your day, so use the system, report the individuals and let us take it from there.
“For our staff, it is better to monitor the problem as it is happening as we can view the area of concern on CCTV and deal with everything quickly.
“We have a fantastic atmosphere at the Lane and by working together we can prevent the small minority ruining it for everyone.”
Last month, the chief executive of Castleford Tigers rugby club warned fans to ensure that homophobic chants at out gay Crusaders star Gareth Thomas were not repeated.
The club was fined £40,000 last year after a small number of fans yelled abuse at Thomas. The fine was cut to £20,000 on appeal and the club banned three people.
