One of the UK’s largest gay saunas, Chariots in Shoreditch, East London, was severely damaged in a fire in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to the venue at 6:05am. By the time that they had arrived, around 150 men had been evacuated from the four story building without any injuries. The venue can hold a maximum of 500 people.

The London Fire Brigade said 30 firefighters had the fire under control by 7:39 am. Much of ground floor of the venue has been destroyed by the fire.

An investigation into the cause of the incident is under way.

A Fire Brigade spokesman said it was not clear what happened to the evacuated men, who were presumably in a state of undress.
