As someone the state is currently saying will retire at 68 but that could rise to over 70! I look on in envy at anyone retiring at 65 let alone 60!

The retirement age should be the same for everyone, the fact that few women who was lucky enough to live in the baby boomer years are still retiring at 60 is shocking, its against every notion gender equality.

  2. I’ve asked a thousand times but have YET to get an answer.

Why do women get to collect their pension earlier than men, particularly when MEN have shorter life-spans?

It seems that this isn’t a transgender rights issue but rather a gender equality issue. If transgender women are allowed to collect earlier and transgender men are made to wait longer, that doesn’t make the system more fair and non-discriminatory it just makes transgender people part of the discriminatory system.

I don’t understand why men aren’t up in arms over this bias and why it hasn’t been challenged in court on the basis of gender discrimination.

And before anyone says that this is some kind of pay back to men for discrimination against women, DON’T. Discriminating against men based on the sins of their fathers makes NO sense and does not promote women’s equality.

    1. Oh, and it seems obvious to me that if you end the gender discrimination in the pensions law then the transgender discrimination in the pensions law will take care of itself and then we can turn our focus and energy to REAL issues of discrimination against our transgender brothers and sisters.

Well I would rather PinkNews reported what’s happening in Brazil:

Priscila, a 22-year old trans woman in Brazil , was captured on surveillance camera being shot seven times, execution style, earlier this month. After shooting her, the suspects fled in a car. Police do not appear to have any significant leads. Her killing was followed, 20 hours later, by the murder of Valdecir. She was shot in the head and neck.

THIS IS WHAT INTOLERANCE LOOKS LIKE!

This is Brazil, where a LGBT person is slain every other day, 250 in the last year alone. Its officially the most dangerous place in the world to be trans.

Some may even call what’s happening in Brazil genocide.

The governments of the world fail to hold Brazil to account for this campaign of assassination.

I do not understand why so many people keep trying to brush issues such as the shooting you mention under the carpet.

That was a horrible event. Unfortunately it is happening constantly and in a lot of countries is being ignored by the state and encouraged by religious leaders.

I have some contacts in Latin American countries and I can assure you, the situation is a lot worse for transsexual people, than is reported.

I will answer your direct question about why women retired at 60: it was to enable them to look after ageing parents and /or grandchildren. Old age pensions came into play before the welfare state, so most people couldn’t afford to care for family any other way.

  3. Well, I’m a baby boomer child so when I get my GRC I’ll expect my state pension to be paid about 2 1/2 years earlier than it would be than if I was male.

But if I was a trans-man, there would be no financial incentive at all to getting my GRC as it would put back my pension by the same time!

    Daft, or what?

    Hmmm.

First off, a story is often just a story: that is, just because i write it or Pink News carries it doesn’t actually say anything about our personal views on the matter. Nor does carrying a story that some feel less important than another (like the Brazilian abuse) mean that the other stuff won’t also get covered.

As has been suggested, if you want it written about, contact PN (or me…my e-mail is pretty publically available).

I’d say that for all its dryness, this is an important issue with echoes of a lot of other stuff likely to affect the LGBT world in the next few years. Because at its heart is “retrospectivity” – the idea of going back and adjusting the past in light of new ideas.

Think about the Repeal Bill and the “amnesty” for those convicted of gay offences. There is a major argument to be had there about whether attempting to change the past legal record is the right way to achieve what is intended.

oh. And on this issue, i’m with the noble Lord. I think its complicated, and i don’t have an answer.

I think it right to report it and right to stimulate debate.

    End of.

the Govt brought the GRA scheme in to allow TGs to get pensions but if they can’t follow the rules then they have to do without. simple enough.
I got my pension on my 60th birthday by gettinga GRC when I was 60 and five months.

I worked in one job where everyone retired at 60, regardless of gender presentation, no option to stay on. I worked in another job where everyone retired at 62 regardless of gender presentation, again, no option to stay on.

The State pensionable age (not retirement age – that is a misnomer) should be the same for everyone regardless of gender.
