It’s important that he mentioned the personal angle – lots of politicians don’t. I always have the impression that most homophobes think that being l&g is purely a genital activity and have no perception of us as people with human feelings and relationships.
Riondo, exactly right. The majority of straight society do not know us. Once they do and realise we are not much different from them, then their opinions can change. We need more dialogue with them, including religious denominations and the media, especially with tabloid rags such as the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror and others. All of their homophobic rants and gay baiting are based on ignorance and stereotyping, lack of education. Its so clear that they don’t know us or care to. For them sadly, ignorance is bliss.
In fact opinion surveys usually show that accepting attitudes towards us, including a belief in equal legal rights, are strongly correlated with awareness of knowing l&g people personally.
It won’t happen. The NY state senate is Republican controlled and has been for decades, bar 2008 – 2010 When the Democrats controlled it they quickly imploded into factional infighting and achieved nowt. Other states will have gay marriage long before NY.

At least someone is giving such great support and showing some sense.
