Dr Qawardi’s views are disgusting, but they’re not Ken’s views, who has been campaigning for LGBT rights long even before Boris was arguing against the repeal of section 28.

    1. Indeed, well said. Ken was addressing our rallies and demonstrations before section 28 even existed too.

    2. Jock S. Trap 10 Mar 2011, 8:37am

It’s the fact he gives the platform for these known haters. He needs to distance himself from them not cosy up to them. Of course it could be these haters are helping fund his campaign?!!

      1. Jock S. Trap 10 Mar 2011, 8:44am

Lets not forget who Ken broke ranks with and sided with and campaign for in Tower Hamlets!!

  2. bollocks hes a cnut and hates us boris is a bigger cnut but he dosent lie about it

    1. Patrick Lilley 10 Mar 2011, 5:12am

@ James I listened to Ken for 45 mins answer in detail quesitons about his record on gay issues and he has been at the front line pushing gay equality agenda for 30 years. Open a history book or look it up on WIKIPEDI if you havnt had a education..

      1. Yes ken did some good things in the past now with a large Muslim population he does not need our vote and is happy to let gay hating people speak at city hall. People chain and ken has penalisng the poorest people with £2 cash bus fare is kinda cruel and moving shoreditch on he east London line into zone 1 from zone 2 has made the tube unaffordable for some of the poorest people. Ken is a politician not a humanitarian

        1. Actually, if you look at the plans for the East London line under Ken it was proposed that the whole line (including Shoreditch High Street) would be in zone 2, this would provide a cheap way around outer London when linked up to the rest of the Overground.

Boris moved Shoreditch High Street into zone 1. As for fares, they’ve risen more since Boris took charge. Oyster bus fare was 80p and has now steadily risen to £1.30 and the cash fare is £2.20.

Ken has always given a voice to some of the most unpleasant people, he seems to believe in free speech for all, but look at his personal track record. He supported many gay rights events, transport was cheaper under Ken and the only people financially better off under Boris are those (mostly) well off people in West London where he abolished their congestion charge.

      2. Jock S. Trap 10 Mar 2011, 8:41am

He may have done some good for LGBT equalityy but sadly each time he cosies up to these extremist who want us dead that kind of gets neutralised. He need to make up his mind if he wants to be open minded or closed minded.

The true fighter of LGBT rights doesn’t side with extremists who thing we should be murdered.

  3. “Am I to believe the Daily Mail rather than what I hear a man say with his own voice?”

Is Sheikh Yusuf al-Qawardi a man of his word? or does he say one thing to the kuffar and another to the Muslim brothers…(al Taqiyya as endorsed in the Koran)

    1. Jock S. Trap 10 Mar 2011, 8:42am

al Taqiyya – yep – then they wonder why we have problems trusting these people.

  4. Blooming heck ken, i love you man, but you make it really difficult sometimes.

  5. Ken acts like a man of the people but he moved shoreditch station into zone one making tripling the price of a ticket and making it impossible to travel around zone one. He intorduced the oyster card that tracks our movements and increased the price of a single cash fare on the bus in any zone to a penalty price of £2.00. so if your poorer and forget your oyster a large portion of your disposable income will have to cover the price plus how do you top up your oyster if your a cleaner and have to gey the bus at 4am ? he hates poor people but loves power h

    1. agreed, its clear that hes a homophobe and now hes best buddies with lutfurs army th mayor. Livingstone knows the muslim vote is much more important than the lgbt vote based on demographics. And he insidiously hopes to make himself more appealing to this mass vote in 2012 mayoral election, by his dubious associations with right wing muslims. And yes he don’t give a damn bout the poor.

      1. Patrick Lilley 10 Mar 2011, 5:14am

Oyster Cards speeded up bus journeys!

        You are paranoid!

        1. Patrick Lilley 10 Mar 2011, 5:17am

Ken is 100% in favour of protecting gay people from discrimination and has been at the front line and pilloried by the Daily Mail for it for 30 years. I have heard him speak at length on this issue and if one politician had to be chosen who had an unblemished record on gay issues it is Ken. Call him a Trot, say he is yesterdays man but he has been THE key ally of the gay community (and other minorities who face discrimination).

          1. Rubbish: When he invites genodically homophobic lunatics for meetings he shows that he is willing to throw the safety and security of gay people under the bus. He simply cannot be trusted when he courts maniacs like Al Qaradawi.

He has not promised to NEVER again welcome people who want to kill us.

Livingston is yesterday’s man. Thanks for your efforts in the past Ken. But if you cannot see who grossly offensive and dangerous a bigot like Al Qaradawi is, then no LGBT person should vote for him.

          2. well hes obviously changed for the worse then, end of discussion.

        2. Yes oyster speeded up journeys for peak time zone 1 coommuters but what about zone 3&4 off peak why charge the poorest so much why penalise them its a nasty regressive tax for those who don’t obey him

        3. Kens motto could be my enemies enemy is my friend.

        4. At what cost, and they still are slow.

      2. Jock S. Trap 10 Mar 2011, 8:50am

What makes me laugh is he campaigned for Lutfur Rahman, the mayor of Tower Hamlets, the vote to decide to have a mayor was corrupt, the final vote was corrupt, the mayor himself is believed to be corrupt. Apt then Ken choses to side with this man. The sect Lutfur appeals to don’t believe in democracy yet they voted to get him in, what hypocrites!

  6. de Villiers 9 Mar 2011, 5:20pm

Perhaps those who support Ken are self-loathing.

  7. Al Qaradawi was filmed while making many of his statements.

Ken Livingston is a liar and a fraud.

His links with the genocidal maniac Al Qaradawi cancels all his other pro-gay positions,

No LGBT person in their right mind should ever vote for Livingston again until he makes a full apology for his previous links with Qaradawi and promises never to have meetings with any person who supports genocide against gay people.

    1. Patrick Lilley 26 Feb 2012, 1:27am

hi David, Al Qaradawi condemned the 9/11 atrocities… the Christian Bible suggest the death penalty for homosexual (Leviticus) so I expect you will rush down to your local Church and start protesting! I am supporting Ken for Mayor because he is a proven ally of LGBT people for 30 years (as well as understanding the the concern of ordinary Londoners for cheaper fares and more police on the streets. What genocide (mass murder) do you think Al Qaradawi is responsible for? Did you know that the Sun used to write favourably about Al Qaradawi when he condemned the 9/11 atrocities?

  8. So we got a choice between
    – Ken – Supports someone who preaches the execution of gays.
    – Boris – homosexuality is like bestiality.
    Great choice.

Anyone know what the green candidate is like?

    1. actually i rescind this comment.
Im still backing Ken, having a conversation does not equal endorsing. Especially given all Kens past pro LGBT work, which is partly the reason why the tabloids hate him so much.

    2. I agree! Ken is a loser! Any gay or indeed person who votes for this man shouldn’t be able to vote!

    3. de Villiers 9 Mar 2011, 9:08pm

      > – Boris – homosexuality is like bestiality

Why make a comment that is totally untrue and incorrect?

      1. No I didnt, in a spectator article Boris argued against civil partnerships, saying if the state recognised homosexuality it would one day have to recognised bestiality.

        1. de Villiers 12 Mar 2011, 10:16am

It looks as though you are trying to score debating points rather than being real.

    4. Jock S. Trap 10 Mar 2011, 8:52am

Erm actually Boris supports Equal Marriage!

      1. Right, same sex marriage has metamorphosed from a “ludicrous parody of the real thing” (2008) to “yeah, why not?” (2010). He got good marks for that.

          1. This wasnt always his position. Im all for him changing his mind, but given his past comments i am entirely within my rights to believe he is being false.

Man boris has got some dedicated followers who are willing to overlook anything.

    5. Patrick Lilley 26 Feb 2012, 1:31am

Ken does not “support” someone who preaches the execution of gays…. As Mayor he has met and will meet again religious leaders he may disagree with, as he has stated. I think that is reasonable. He meets Catholic leaders and the head Rabbi both of whom have very negative opinions of us. However I trust Ken to oppose them while meeting them… if gay rights/equality are discussed. Ken introduced civil partnerships in London before the Labour Govt endorsed it. He supported Pride. His track record is supported by Peter Tatchell of Outrage AND Ben Summerskill of Stonewall and campaigns against homophobic bullying. @ SCOTT- what have you done for LGBT equality?

  9. Talking to someone -and defending their right to talk- is not a defence of them or their views. As the last paragraph says, ‘it was right for him to meet with members of faith groups even if he disagreed with their views.’ Moreover, and this is something that is often neglected by the left and right alike, peoples’ view can change. I’m not saying that happened in this case, but people should remember it. I was raised in an anti-gay cult ffs.

    1. EDL supporter 13 Mar 2011, 8:35pm

So, would Red Ken have said the same thing about talking to Hitler, or Pol Pot, or Stalin (“I’m only talking to them – I didn’t do any of the actual genocide myself”). he probably would have hugged Stalin or Pol Pot, just as he hugged Qaradawi.

  10. It’s difficult to make sense of Ken sometimes, and I say that as an admirer, particularly in view of his willingness to support lgbt rights when few public figures dared. This mad cleric is obviously a two-faced liar, and I can’t believe Ken doesn’t know it.

  11. “Am I to believe the Daily Mail rather than what I hear a man say with his own voice?”

Am I to believe the US have banned the man simply because of what they read in the Daily Mail?

Thank God Ken no longer runs my city. The man is a complete balloon.

  12. A great city like London should have a progressive Green Mayor! Livingstone and that Conservative buffoon are the pits!

    1. Unfortunately londons great/glory days are over . much like the great once preceeding britain , now more commonly known as broken britain.

      1. Jock S. Trap 10 Mar 2011, 4:44pm

Sadly true but I still love the city. It deffo the best city in the world! Even better without Ken!

        1. “best city” where people can be harassed out of their homes/areas . Disagree with you on that one.

      2. Unfortunately londons great/glory days are over

Oh, right – the concerts, galleries, restaurants, talks, clubs, theatres, parks, buildings (etc) aren’t what they were in … what, the 70s for example?! You must live in a different London from the one I live in.

(Incidentally, the ‘Great’ in Britain was historically to distinguish it from Little Britain, ie Brittany.)

        1. you just listed what can be found in any british or european city. Life does exist outside london . so what makes london so great? or are you just easily led by all the hype. As for the 70s , was not born then. But was born and brought up in south london and its grim. If you think its so great, then good for you if you enjoy living in a city with extreme poverty and social exclusion , but really its nothing special .

  13. “Here was Sheikh Qaradawi saying, not just to me in private but the audience he addressed in City Hall and then to [Jeremy] Paxman on Newsnight: No one should discriminate against a homosexual;

Did al-Qaradawi actually say this on Newsnight? It should be eay enough to verify. Does anyone who saw the interview remember?

  14. Jock S. Trap 10 Mar 2011, 8:35am

And here we have one of the reasons I will Never vote for Ken.

Say what you like about Boris he is Not devisive. It doesn’t matter if your Black, White, Gay, Lesbian, Straight….in London, your a Londoner and thats what Boris stands up for, London and Londoners.

This is why I will deffo be voting Boris May 2012.

    1. That is an absolute crock. The man has repeatedly made semi-racist slurs in his spectator and telegraph comment pieces over the years. He has made homophobic comments throughout his career.
He also believes that we should cut the top rate of income tax.

The man stands for the wealthy and doesnt give a darn about n e one else.

  15. George Broadhead 10 Mar 2011, 8:54am

Livingstone Wrong to Defend Muslic Cleric
KENILWORTH, 12 JANUARY 2005 — The Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) today condemned London Mayor Ken Livingstone’s attempts to justify his meetings with Muslim cleric Dr Yusuf Al-Qaradawi as “partial, selective and verging on misleading propaganda”.

Mr Livingstone yesterday launched an 80-page dossier attempting to refute claims that Al-Qaradawi is homophobic, misogynistic and anti-Semitic.

On the same day, The Times published comments by Dr Al-Qaradawi saying that Allah had sent the Asian tsunami to punish tourists who drank alcohol and indulged in “sexual perversions.”

At his press conference, Mr Livingstone admitted that he did not agree with Qaradawi’s opinions on gay rights, saying it was “unlikely that we’ll be seeing him on the next Pride march”.

But George Broadhead, secretary of the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association – one of the organisations condemned by Mr Livingstone in his dossier for having complained about Qaradawi’s visit to City Hall as the mayor’s guest – said: “Ken Livingstone is rapidly losing the plot. Al-Qaradawi has made repulsive comments about gay people and has said that although he personally doesn’t support the death penalty for gays, he supports the rights of Islamic theocracies to murder their gay citizens using various barbaric methods. The cleric’s latest comments about the tsunami must be extremely distressing for the surviving families of victims.”

Mr Broadhead said that he suspected that Mr Livingstone’s obdurate defence of his association with Al-Qaradawi was part of the Labour Party’s desperate attempts to win back the Muslim voters that have been lost to them over the Iraq War.

“We have long been admirers of Mr Livingstone and his championing of minority communities in London, but he has tainted his reputation with his stance on Al-Qaradawi. We agree that it is important that moderate Muslims are encouraged to participate in the capital’s life, but Al-Qaradawi is not, by any definition, moderate. We are deeply disappointed that Ken Livingstone has decided to continue defending the indefensible.”

  16. Close the door on your way out Ken.

No gay person in their right mind could vote for you, due to your unflinching support for a man who wants to kill us.

    1. debating with, does not mean agreeing with.
I once met nicholas soames, I still think he is a noob.

    2. Jock S. Trap 10 Mar 2011, 4:59pm

I think you’ll find he supports many like like this anti-gay Muslim cleric. He seems awfully cosy with them.

      1. He also stood up for LGBT rights when it meant getting lynched in the press. Why do you think the telegraph and the Mail hate him so much?
Boris said homosexuality was like bestiality – he has been directly homophobic. No one can find any evidence of Ken being directly homophobic.

        1. Jock S. Trap 10 Mar 2011, 5:20pm

Sorry but I don’t see at any time during his time as Mayor Boris cosying up to homophobic Muslim Clerics.

Ken wants to have his cake and eat it.

He stood up for LGBT rights.
He invited anti gay muslims extremists with open arms.
He supported and campaign for a very dodgy Mayor of Tower Hamlets and now defends those very extremists that want us dead.

          Ken Livingstone… No way!!

          1. See this just isnt true.
Boris and the Jesus house controversy anyone? Where Boris was on with Agu Irkup a pastor famous for gay exorcisms.

  17. Jock S. Trap 10 Mar 2011, 11:47am

Lets not forget this hypocrites TV presenting job for Iran.

    1. Good point.

    2. was’t the weasel livingstone paid for that work also? He really is treacherous.

      1. Jock S. Trap 10 Mar 2011, 4:08pm

Yes he was paid very handsomely!

If he was to become mayor again expect special treatment for all his extremist anti-human friends.

Not a mistake I want repeating.

  18. what boris did for london outside zone1? big fat zero. he will be best known for scraping western ext. zone in london’s richest borough kensington

    1. Jock S. Trap 11 Mar 2011, 8:30am

      Which was democratically voted on.

62% voted for it to be removed. He originally said he didn’t want to rid of it but maybe change it but he actually listened to the people. Something Ken failed on many, many times but then he is a Labour/Communist where the only was is to dictate to people. Ken has already said he would replace it going Against democracy.

As usual the only thing Labour tend to be good at is spending money where there isn’t any and then someone has to come in and somehow have to help us back to living within our means.

  19. Li Thotomist 11 Mar 2011, 7:53pm

I can’t bear Ken Livingstone but in fairness, he ceased to be Mayor of London in May 2008, Boris Johnson took over then. And Shoreditch (East London Line) was moved into Zone 1 in April 2009 – I do wonder if some comments here are from people who don;t get it that Ken Livingstone has been out of office for 3 years.

Likewise, I may be wrong on the details but I think in early 2008, a single bus fare using Oyster was 90p, it’s now, after 3 years of Boris, £1.30. I think even in 2008, only 2% of bus fares were paid in cash, so perhaps Oyster is what counts.

But on the meatier issue, I think Ken is an idiot who can’t admit when he’s wrong – like a lot of politicians. He’s been a friend to the LGBT community when we had very few of them in power, but he can’t admit he’s been a fool to meet Qaradawi or that Qaradawi’s own website has carried homophobic calls for us to be killed. There’s no way back and Ken should admit his error.

    1. Yes, I believe the reason that Boris moved Shoreditch into zone 1 was under pressure from the train operators South Eastern and Southern. Leaving Shoreditch High St in Z2 would have meant a lot of people saving money by buying a travelcard to zone 2 only and then changing at New Cross (Gate) for the ELL rather than going to London Bridge. This would have saved commuters who worked in Bishopsgate and Shoreditch a fortune but would have cost the train companies dearly.

  20. What a twunt.
