This year’s Liverpool Pride festival will be held on Saturday August 6th, it has been revealed.

Organisers are still waiting to find out how much funding they will receive from Liverpool city council but say they have heard “positive noises” from councillors.

Earlier this month, some reports claimed that the council was refusing to give the festival any financial help.

However, organisers said these claims were false.

Last year’s Pride was Liverpool’s first, attracting more than 20,000 people to the city.

James Davies, Liverpool Pride trustee director, told the Liverpool Echo: “We had a really successful day last year. We are planning for this year’s festival to go ahead and to be free.”

He said the day had made £560,000 for the local economy and added: “The festival was really inclusive. It is not just for gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people. Half the people who came along were straight.

In February, councillors revealed that they plan to promote and develop Liverpool’s gay quarter to cash in on the so-called ‘pink pound’.

The council has hired a planning consultancy to look at how the city can be marketed as a worldwide tourist destination for gay travellers.
