    1. Agreed… all steps towards equality are a step forward. Would have been good to read the response by an organisation representing transgender people to get an idea of how far these new guidelines will help those in prison and an opportunity for them to highlight any other concerns/issues affecting transgender people in prison.

    for a change.

    The last government ignored them.

Interestingly the buzz is that this is all Ken Clark’s work and that a certain Lib Dem Equalities Firebrand wasn’t interested. Indeed the rumours are that May has had to take the promised formulation of a new set of laws specifically dealing with Trans Rights from her as she claimed she was ‘too busy with Gay Marriage.’

Looks good for Trans Rights if they are being aggressively pushed by more than one member of the Government.

Oh and this was achieved because of ECHR ruling for a German prisoner. The government just don’t want to be on the wrong side of the ruling and forced to pay out compensation.

They have always had to be dragged kicking and screaming through the courts in order to extract human rights. from slavery, womens suffrage to the Irish question, the ruling class’ hav always seen granting of basic rights as a diminishment of their powers……from James 1st rewriting of the bible fiction to the printing press….. Less the proles know the better.

You want to see the Daily Mail’s take on this one. They did of course leave out the part that transgender people can wear gender appropriate clothing ‘at their own expense’.

How that rag isn’t sued daily I don’t know. People are put in jail for a lot less, classed as spreading hatred and violence to minorities, yet the columnists in the Daily Mail walk free to stick the knife into every known minority on a regular basis.

…..I always thought Ken Clarke was wasted in the Law and Justice Tory Party and now i’m sure of it. He certainly is the best leader the L&J Tories never had. What a pity, however he is the human and caring face of the L&J Tory party. Pity there aren’t more like him. The comments on the Daily Whinge story about this are as usual predictable but quite a laff if a tad sad at the same time. Have a read at the link above and have a good belly laugh. There are some really nasty and weird people in the Uk sadly. I’m glad i am Irish and not for the first time have i thought that. We here in the north of Ireland have our own government now and while it is far from perfect at least it’s not the Law & Justice Tory Party version.

The Daily Hate Mail comments are only “a laff” if you are in any way connected to them. As usual they are bigotted and transphobic and far from funny in any form.
Being imprisoned is every trans-persons worst nightmare – well, excluding gang encounters at any rate – and yet Red Tops are able to wind the public up, encourage and fuel their hate. Sad? Yes. Scary? Very much so. It only takes one person to get very, very angry at what the papers such as the DHM tell them and then someone could very easily be hurt.
So I don’t laugh at the comments from Hate Mail readers.

My amusement is at the unmitigated and ignorant homophobia of the majority of the posters, fuelled i suspect by adherence to the pixie in the sky Abrahamic cult myhtology most Daily Wail readers suffer from.. One has to laugh at these people otherwise one would go off the rails and perhaps do something silly at the frustration engendered by these non humans.

  10. The number of imprisoned transsexuals is scary.

The article talks of 30 trans people in prison at any one time. With an estimate of 12,500 transsexual people in the uk [1], that means 0.25% imprisonment rate.

In contrast, with a total prison population of 95,000 [2], the total imprisonment rate is about 0.15%

If anything, this shows the amount of discrimination against trans people, forcing them into illegal activities.

    1. I don’t want to suggest that there is anything wrong with beign trans-sexual. This apparent over-representation of Transexual people could be due to the mental health issues which might occur in the run up to realising what is appropriate for a person – e.g. depression etc. Mental Health issues are heavily overrepresented in the prison population. It might also be because people self medicate to resolve their issues in a manner outside of standard means – this might draw them towards drug taking.

      I hope that makes sense.

and for your information transsexuality is not a mental health problem but a proven medical problem
and how can trans people ever be overly represented ?
its more a case of us being mis-represented by media sterotyping

Well it looks like a bit of a disaster for as from my reading some trans women who have had genital surgery would be housed in a mens prison (you can have surgery before your allowed to apply for a gender recognition certificate and hence be legally female).
