Members of Manchester’s gay village have taken part in their own take on Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, described as “the new gay anthem” by Sir Elton John.

The video, which was produced with the support of Universal Music, includes customers of clubs and bars including AXM, Churchill’s, Belinda Scandals, Poptastic, Cruz 101, Via, and New York New York who were asked to spontaneously lip-sync to Gaga’s track.

To other some critics, Born This Way is a rehash of Madonna’s 1989 hit Express Yourself. The lyrics include: “No matter gay, straight, or bi/ Lesbian, transgendered life/ I’m on the right track, baby” and “Don’t be a drag, just be a queen.”

The single is the first on a new album of the same name.

In the United States, a special edition of the single is being sold exclusively by the retailer Target. The chain has a track record for donating to homophobic political causes. In order to sign the deal with the Lady Gaga, the chain agreed to “make amends” for their past support of homophobes and donate to LGBT charities.
