  1. I agree. It is just a matter of time. Someone will either take a gun to them or run their vehicle thru their protests.

    1. Paddyswurds 4 Mar 2011, 11:22am

.about time too…..this nhas been going on too long. Time these leechs were shown the door . A one way ticket to Hell is too easy for them.

      1. Hodge Podge 4 Mar 2011, 8:13pm

You know they bring their children to every protest? And that they would LOVE being martyrs?

    2. Jock S. Trap 9 Mar 2011, 2:06pm

Yep, it’s just a shame those dappy judges don’t see it. As usual it take something dramatic and preventable before they make changes.

  2. martyn notman 4 Mar 2011, 2:40am

..and i find it very hard to feel sorry for any of them that get in the way!

  3. I’m honestly impressed they’ve gone this long without being shot or something. I’m very much against the use of violence and murder for any reason to solve any problem, but I wouldn’t lift a finger to try and prevent someone from attacking these guys (as long as they weren’t endangering anyone else or going for the poor little kids or anything).

    1. Paddyswurds 4 Mar 2011, 11:24am

….why haven’t the kids been taken from them long ago… Kansas must be a very weird place that allows this corruption of small children.

      1. I think that anyone that forces their opinions on small children are abusing them. Teach them the facts, then let them develop their opinions when they are old enough to understand the world. Oh and find out by themselves there is no god.

    2. Jock S. Trap 9 Mar 2011, 2:07pm

Tep, so am I but I think after this backward disrespectful judgement it not if but more like when.

  4. time to picket the funerals of their members with placards saying “the rest of the world hates repulsive bigots”

    1. Paddyswurds 4 Mar 2011, 11:26am

…seems like it won’t be long til that opportunity presents itself……..I suggest a carnival in the graveyard the day they are planted. Give them a good Gay sendoff.

  5. Vile religious whacko’s are becoming so deeply unpleasant and so plentiful in US it is dragging the whole place down.
    Homophobia is the new racism.

    1. Paddyswurds 4 Mar 2011, 11:43am

…to be honest i’m starting to think there is something more behind a lot of it….jealousy!….. pure and simple. They see gay people without a care in the world, our own homes, good jobs or business’s, handsome boyfriends and loads of money….. especially since the credit crunch. Gay people seem to have weathered the crunch way better than the general population and gay holiday destinations are booming while the Benidorms and Costa del Slappers are on their uppers. Just a thought

      1. The Rev J R Boyer 4 Mar 2011, 5:41pm

Yes, the “gays enjoy double income and no kids” stereotype has been used for a long time. It’s inaccurate, however – a perception partially fostered by that good old-fashioned beast, “advertising.”

        1. Paddyswurds 4 Mar 2011, 11:52pm

…..Your not gay then i take by your reply rev……how is it inaccurate i said nothing about two incomes…but even if i did ..that plus no kids and no high maintainance wife whats the problem. And where did you see an ad that said what i did. Im speaking after many years of experience. Sure there are poor gays but they are in the minority.

          1. Jock S. Trap 9 Mar 2011, 2:09pm

erm you seem to be indicating male partners can’t be high maintenance!

  6. Jock S. Trap 4 Mar 2011, 5:16am

Totally agree but to them that probably just means more compensation. Sick b*stards that they are.

    1. Paddyswurds 4 Mar 2011, 11:45am

…what if theres none of them left to claim compo….??

      1. They don’t all go to each picket. There’ll be people at home and as soon as anyone lifts a finger against any of them they’ll sue. It’s how they work.

  7. So the court reaffirmed that t’s not illegal to be an idiot or an disrespectful asshole.

  8. WBC is not a church, it is a tiny CULT of mentally disturbed individuals that needs to be institutionalized. Freedom of speech is not unlimited. This decision b y the Supreme Court gives nut-jobs like these folks free reign to do ANYTHING in the name of “free speech”. As the father said this ruling is totally lacking any common sense. The Supreme Court is putting the safety of the American public at risk by condoning the acts of these insane people!

    1. and what’s the difference between this cult and the christian cult? WBC is a church like the christians etc

      1. The Christian Church, especially the Baptists who this cult specifically use the name of, strongly disown and condemn them, so no, they’re not a recognised church of the christian faith.

      2. That’s like saying the KKK was “a church like the Christians.” The majority of KKK members used a warped understanding of Christianity and the Bible to excuse and even promote their beliefs and actions.

WBC are just the same, except that they haven’t managed to start lynching anyone yet.

    2. Jock S. Trap 9 Mar 2011, 2:12pm

and to think they teach children their bigotted values. Do people really need to wonder why such religious people are hardly suited to having kids?!

  9. About time someone stood up to them. If it happened at any funeral I was it I’d kill them.

    1. Paddyswurds 4 Mar 2011, 11:49am

….What America needs for a few weeks is the IRA or an American version. A visit fom a few dudes weariing balaclavas in the midle of a dark night would probably sort the problem without violence.. These creeps are in reality cowards.

      1. that doesn’t really help, either.

Maybe the reason they haven’t been shot at is nobody wants them to be martyrs to their horrible cause.

  10. J Cartier 4 Mar 2011, 7:30am

I’m very surprised that someone hasnt taken them out years ago.
They must be one of the most hated families in the world.
    Only in America.

  11. The W.B.C. members have their kids with them at all times. Violence against them is NOT an option. This is:

Welcome to the Patriot Guard Riders

    1. And I’d guess that’s why the WBC cowards take the children with them – so they can hide behind them.

Unless all ‘free speech’ is allowed – racism, anti-semitism, etc – then this ruling is a joke. The adult members of the WBC should all be sectioned and their children taken into care where they can be de-programmed and given the chance to lead a normal life.

    2. Another non-violent way to act against the W.B.C.

      Angel Action

There is also a web site named…

The Angel Action – Welcome to the World of Romaine Patterson!

…but it currently has a malware issue. I’ve PM’d the admins of the Fb group.

  12. If anything they will be more than happy for reaching their creator sooner. So someone will be doing an act of pure generosity.

    1. Paddyswurds 4 Mar 2011, 11:55am

…..If a creator existed, i doubt he/she would want this crowd of bile within a trillion light years. I doubt even the dude down below (if he existed) would want them either. Bulid a rocket and send the entire 71 of them to the heart of the Sun.

  13. When these funerals are on, whar are ordinary Americans doing? Do they line the streets in quiet respect like the people of Wootton Basset i n England? WBC would be drowned out by the silent tributes paid by everyone else if Americans took their example.

    1. The Rev J R Boyer 4 Mar 2011, 5:43pm

“Ordinary Americans” like the friends of Matthew Shepard who lined the streets, blocking views of WBC bigots at his funeral, have been quietly doing this for more than a decade.

  14. How about the rights of the people at the funeral want about there right to say goodbye in peace.

    1. Jock S. Trap 9 Mar 2011, 2:13pm

      Apparently they don’t have rights!

      Thats America folks!

  15. Where are the gun lunatics when you need them? I hope someone does snap and shoot the lot of them, they would become a national hero in my eyes. Go USA! USA! USA! :D

  16. Perhaps when Phelps snr eventually pops his clogs everyone else he’s insulted over the years can picket his funeral with placards.
If it’s sauce for the goose it’s sauce for the gander.

    1. Jock S. Trap 9 Mar 2011, 2:14pm

Yeah, me thinks that’ll probably be different!

  17. Hit me up if you want someone to fire the shotgun.

    1. Paddyswurds 4 Mar 2011, 11:57am

…get on with it dude… yesterday!!

      1. thats not a good idea. you’re setting yourself up as a premeditated murderer and anyone who endorses you as an accessory. you also set up this website as condoning violence.

        They’re not worth it!

  18. Yes – just a matter of time.

  19. It is interesting how nobody at large cared about the WBC when they were picketing for years and years the funerals of gay men who died of AIDS. Only when they started picketing the funerals of ‘heroes’ did it get to the Supreme Court.

    1. Fair point… I have a theory that WBC thrive on other people’s resentment and gay funeral protests simply weren’t pissing off enough people on both sides of the political fence.
Phelps snr. has a Noah complex – he wants heaven’s VIP list to comprise of no-one barring himself and his fundie nutjob followers, so if he hasn’t pissed off everyone else on the face of the planet he feels he’s done something wrong.
But it’s a sad indictment of the rest of the USA that it takes the soldier’s funeral protests to outrage America when they couldn’t give a monkey’s about the gay funerals being ruined.
No-one deserves to have their private moment of grief ruined by some sanctimonious prick waving placards about how the deceased is going to hell for living in a country in which some people are tolerant of gays.

    2. @FJ!!. Exactly.

However, ever since the Phelps clan began harassing everyone else too – and thus giving them all a taste of what it feels like to be persecuted – the W.B.C. have by default become the single most effective LGBT advocacy group in North America! :D

  20. this is insane! this is NOT freedom of speech as we know it and this court ruling stinks! how can they allow these insane people target funerals (or other people at any other time) based on their extreme views and at such a delicate time for the family and friends of the dead?

  21. Does anyone know if American law could allow funerals to be added to the types of event covered by the so-called Free Speech Zones? This could require Phelps and co. to exercise their “free speech” in the designated zone out of sight and earshot of the mourners.

    1. I thought they already did. I’m sure i heard something about them havng to be so many hundred yards away. If I’m wrong about that, then Brian’s question stands!

      1. It would seem that the WBC protesters do indeed stand back away from the proceedings at the funerals. If they are required to do this by law as you suggest, Rose, then that is clearly a good thing, though I had the idea that their stand-offishness was merely taken as a point in their favour when the Supreme Court made its ruling a few days ago, suggesting that it’s the WBC’s choice not to literally infiltrate the funerals. (Am I wrong?)

Whatever, the mourners are clearly aware of the protesters’ presence and the funerals are disturbed. So what I had in mind was the sort of “Free Speech Zone” used at political party conferences, state visits, and the like whereby protest is confined to a designated area at a location where it cannot interfere with the proceedings. The construction has apparently been used in various contexts and I was wondering if funerals could be included.

  22. I feel sorry for the WBC children,

Did anyone see ‘America’s Most Hated Family’ by Louis Theroux. He spent time with the family as they were picketing funerals. They bring their young children (as young as 5 and 6 out on these protests). There was 1 really horrible scene where a passing driver threw a can of Coke at the protestors and it hit a WBC child of about 8.

Shirley and Fred Phelps are sick, revolting people. I am shocked their children are not in care.

    1. ‘America’s Most Hated Family’ by Louis Theroux

    2. apparently filling your childrens hearts and minds with hate doesn’t count as child abuse, it should be though. Those kids you pity will grow up to be just like their parents.

      1. @Alan: “…Those kids you pity will grow up to be just like their parents.”

        Not all of them:

Westboro Baptist Church family disowns daughter — 20/20

Son Turns on Church That Pickets Soldiers’ Funerals

More may yet come to their senses. IMO they should be given a fair chance to do so.

        1. “…(Nate) Phelps is among four of the 13 Phelps children who’ve severed ties with their family…”

    3. Yes, I saw it. I watched with a group of gay men as it happens, all disgusted by every aspect of the WBC ‘way of life’. I did feel sorry for the child hit by the can. That’s just nasty. He was way too young even to understand the banner he was holding. Is there not a law under which those kids can be taken into care and ‘de-programmed’ from this hate cult?

      1. Jock S. Trap 9 Mar 2011, 2:22pm

This hatred must screw these kids up!

  23. I feel deep sorrow for those poor kids of the Phelps clan

  24. One only needs to look at their vile website,g*dh*tesf*gs to witness their totally twisted views on what constitutes christian values!Currently it seems their ‘leader/preacher/,Fred Phelps isn’t in the best of health & already gay rights groups are foaming at the collective mouths to ‘picket’ this evil sub-human’s funeral when the time comes! I just wish I could be there! And,if they were forcing alcohol and/or drugs down their poor kids’ throats they’d more than likely be arrested and their off-spring taken into care.Yet,under the ‘defense’ of the right to religious choice they get away with brainwashing their kids into believeing their views are valid and acceptable. This is one of the most detestable aspects of their ‘ministry! They certainly do not speak in god’s name!

    1. The Rev J R Boyer 4 Mar 2011, 5:45pm

Fortunately, thanks to the actions of “Anonymous,” the WBC web sites are all still down and inoperable these past few days.

  25. All those people that wonder why the Phelps clan can get away with it?

Watch some of the videos of them and observe the massive police presence around them. They have officially endorsed public security everywhere they go. If it wasn’t for that, the Westboro Baptist Church would have been buried, along with it’s congregation, years ago.

What needs to be done is the Police should charge them for this. That’s not going to come cheap, so every time they go to a funeral, they get sent a massive police bill. Either that, or they go unprotected and take their chances, and somehow, I doubt even they are that stupid.

    1. Jock S. Trap 9 Mar 2011, 2:24pm

What your saying is if it wasn’t for the police presence this WBC would be forced ‘underground’ literally!!

  26. The Westboro Baptist Church is a clan of litigious, opportunistic trolls who rose to prominence when the Internet got fast enough to handle streaming video.

Someone needs to treat the W.B.C.’s kids to a round of ice cream cones while their parents are dragged down an alley to where they can exercise their right of free speech as they are being beaten with their own signs.

  27. Bill (Scotland) 4 Mar 2011, 4:00pm

I think many things that happen in the US are bizarre and in some cases odious (I’m not an American), but in this case I think the US Supreme Court has got it absolutely correct. Freedom of speech means nothing if it is only for people that are easy to like or who espouse popular views.

The Phelps’s and their clan of weirdo religious nutters are repulsive people, but their right to free speech needs to be protected. The US Supreme Court, for all its faults (and unlike, all too often, the ECHR) cuts straight through to the nub of arguments such as this – the right to free speech. Anyone who watched Question Time on BBC1 last night will have seen David Starkey so a similar hatchet job on those who think ‘rights’ are only for those you agree with.

I think trying to shut down the expression of views one doesn’t agree with is a deeply flawed approach. Thoughts and the expression of them, however, odious, should never be a crime – turning them into actions is another matter.

  28. The last thing this group needs is a martyr. Speak out against hate speech, yes. But harm them? NO!

  29. Karen Rosewood 4 Mar 2011, 6:26pm

My deepest sorrows to the family of this young man. A funeral is a time of our final goodbyes. How tragic that members of this “church” made it so much more painful for his loved one’s. My sincere condolences, and please know that you have the support of every sane person on this earth. Let us remember that all people all equal. All people. Some, however, are hideous and ugly minded. I must believe that the day will come where we will live together, without this hate..

  30. Hmm, now what would really be funny is if the whole group died in some freak natural accident, and we make others like them believe that is what happens when you falsely invoke God’s word… yeah, that might do the trick.

    1. ok, maybe not ‘funny’, but you get my meaning

      1. It’s about as funny as protesting a funeral, with a God hates fags sign.

  31. Liz Liddell 5 Mar 2011, 3:45am

The True God does not hate anything or anyone…but, Jahovah God, the True Gods opposer – a jealous, murderer, shedder of innocent blood, hater of homosexuals, women and anyone or anything opposed to his megalomaniac grasp for power – would really like this ‘mob’ of idiotic freaks and child abusers!

  32. Demonstrate your freedom of speech:

    (785) 273-0325 – Westboro Baptist Church
    (785) 273-0325 – Fred W. Phelps Sr., cell phone
    (785) 272-4135 – Fred Phelps, Jr.
    (785) 273-0529 – Benjamin Phelps
    (785) 233-4162 – Phelps Family Law Office
    (785) 233-0766 – Fax for Phelps Family Law Office

  33. Simon Halliwell 5 Mar 2011, 10:44am

Yet another so called church with it’s so called rule bending. I notice ( from ireland) the interesting fact how no attention was paid to WBC when they were picketing funerals of gay men who died of AIDS. It would appear they only started picketing the funerals of ‘heroes’ did the Supreme Court.
take notice. Someone needs to place these this group into line very soon, before some innocent child gets shot!

  34. Donald Glenn 5 Mar 2011, 7:23pm

What we should do is move to their tiny little town and make it the gayest place in America ! Dragshows in the streets and hanging out in their public bathrooms, not to mention showing up for services on Sunday morning !! Flirt with everyone of the same sex and just make them down right uncomfortable.LOL We tell them when the protests stop we will leave and not before then !

  35. Dear Pink News Readers

My boyfriend have invested our sklls in creating a riveting top quality video to inspire a semse of courage and pride to LGBT youth following the surge in gay suicides. We hope the video reaches as many LGBT people as possible and would like your support in this regard, instilling a sense of self worth. After all has been said and done,we are who are.Period.Hope you enjoy
    Its okay to be gay

Sorry for the spam. Please support the movement

    1. Thank you and your boyfriend for this video JK. :)

I’ve added it to this thread over on TalkBass:

  36. “Fred Phelps does not believe what he is doing. This is a scam.”

  37. Jock S. Trap 9 Mar 2011, 2:02pm

I’m sure WBC will only see their own being shot as a money making project.

  38. I think if other people have different opinions than us, they don’t deserve to breathe the air that us better people breathe. Let’s start a movement to take our freedom of speech away!! or at change it to “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”

Get real, opinion is opinion, yours is no better than mine and vice versa. Free speech is just that, FREE. You have to take the good with the bad.
