A gay councillor had to be treated in hospital after a man he met for sex attacked him with a hammer.

Neil Wilson, a Labour member of Newham council, invited Marian Calin to his Plaistow home in January last year after meeting him at Wanstead Flats.

But after Mr Wilson asked him to leave, Calin, 29, picked up a hammer and struck him on the back of the head, causing a wound which needed five stitches.

According to the Newham Recorder, the councillor admitted he had initially lied to police about the circumstances of the attack by saying that Calin had knocked on his door.

He later told police officers how the pair had met and blamed his first account on a “combination of fear and embarrassment”, as well as his head injury.

Calin, of Tottenham, was arrested in August at Dover docks.

He claimed that Mr Wilson had tried to throttle him during sex and tried to hit him with the hammer.

He was cleared of wounding with intent and was instead convicted of unlawful wounding.

Sentencing will take place on March 1st.
