  1. Palin didn’t just name Ms Gifford and others as “targets”. She released pictures of Ms Gifford and others with gunsight crosshairs overlayed over Ms Gifford and others.
I think if the Palin debate is being mentioned, then it should be clarified that it is over the gunsight crosshairs, not simply the word ‘target’

  2. Whatever the state of mind of the shooter, the whole crosshairs thing raises a rebuttable presumption that those people may have influenced the guy into doing what he did.

The vitriol of the right, especially the aggressive religious right that routinely demonises gays, which has become current in America today, and that they have been exporting to places like Uganda, (where, surprise surprise, people take it as an encouragement to the genocide of gays) is out of control, and is made worse by partisan broadcasters with low standards.

  3. Jo Wildermuth 10 Jan 2011, 6:06pm

The vitriol in the USA has come from the LEFT for over 30 years – I am both a US citizen and a British Subject and I hear the media in the US on a daily basis – they are the ones that create an environment where any descent is attacked violently and people are threatened by being fired, ousted from the community and yes SHOT – the right wing has been the ones told to shut-up, sit down, and do not have an opinion that is different from the left!!
Have you heard this guy had an alter in the back of his house to worship the occult – hardly right wing kind of behavior. No you won’t either because it does not give the media a chance to blame the right….

  4. Gay Latino Daniel Hernandez, Jr. saved Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ life:

Daniel Hernandez, Jr. was the right man in the right place at the right time. Just five days into his internship for Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford, the 20-year old college student was checking people into Rep. Gifford’s “Congress on Your Corner” event when the shooting started.

According to Arizona Republic, Hernandez started assisting victims before the shooting even stopped.

When the shots began that morning, he saw many people lying on the ground, including a young girl. Some were bleeding. Hernandez said he moved from person to person checking pulses.

“First the neck, then the wrist,” he said. One man was already dead. Then he saw Giffords. She had fallen and was lying contorted on the sidewalk. She was bleeding.

Using his hand, Hernandez applied pressure to the entry wound on her forehead. He pulled her into his lap, holding her upright against him so she wouldn’t choke on her own blood. [snip]

Hernandez used his hand to apply pressure until someone from inside Safeway brought him clean smocks from the meat department. He used them to apply pressure on the entrance wound, unaware there was an exit wound. He never let go of her.

He stayed with Giffords until paramedics arrived. They strapped her to a board and loaded her into an ambulance. Hernandez climbed in with her. On the ride to the hospital, he held her hand. She squeezed his back.

Hernandez’s immediate actions probably saved her life.

  5. Jo,

    1) “…worship the occult – hardly right wing kind of behavior” – have you not heard of religion. One man’s religion is another man’s occult.

    2) I am not sure what being a British Subject has to do with it as it only refers to a small group of people who can claim a loose connection to Britain through India or Republic of Ireland prior to 1949

    3) do you watch Fox news and think it is a left wing organisation?.

BTW it was widely reported here that he had a shrine or alter and with the wackos on the US right it did not surprise me but it’s widespread reporting put a lie to your wildly exaggerated assertions.

  6. Let me guess Jo you watch Fox news. Because I listen to the news everyday too. And seems like you have it a little backwards.

  7. He should be highly commended, many would of panicked and thought of self preservation but he only tried to help.

I feel so sorry for for the family of the 9 year old girl. Tragic.

As palin and her disgusting lot I don’t put all the blame at her as the gunman made the choice but having seen the map and crosshairs and pictures of the assassins target it was a shameful and irresponsible way for plain to handle politics.

I’m not surprised by palins actions, or her methods anyone who listens to her knows shes unpleasant and both a moral & social hypocrit.

All in all it’s deeply saddening incident.

  8. @jo

What are you on about? Are you saying this was inevitable and it’s the fault of left wing politics?
This guy for what ever reason took a gun and gunned down people … Geez he shot a 9 year old !

There’s no defence for what happened. Not to me anyway.

  9. Palin should lose her career over this. It is incitement to murder.

  10. I agree she should face the consequences of insightment. Her speech ” don’t retreat, reload ” is rather vulgar.

But sadly the right to bare arms is sacrosanct in USA. But what can you do legalised guns make defending yourself easier but also easier for would be attackers … But making guns for deffense illegal leaves you unprotected but those setting out to harm will find a way to arm themselves. It’s a real problem.

In the end I think guns are there to stay but I for one would take my money and also invest in as much armour as I could.

  11. westcoastkid 10 Jan 2011, 7:49pm

.. and Palin still has not taken her “target” website section down.

  12. Do you expect her to take it down? She’s prob gonna use this as a reason for people to have more access to guns for protection ! … Oh if only the victims had had a gun she will say >.> or think … Which means it’ll prob come out of her mouth.

Rush was on his radio like a min after the silence today saying how Obama will use this as political ammunition. I was like umm like your doing you right wing nut job?

    Republicans are scary lol

  13. Jo is that short for jack off? you should and when your done go eat some possums you redneck pig

  14. America doesn’t have left-wing politicians anymore. It has far-right politicians (the republicans) and centre-right politicians (the democrats).

This is not to say there are no genuinely left-wing, progressive, liberal people in America – there are plenty – it’s just that the appalling cultural and political machineries of the country (especially the involvement of big business in the media and political funding) work to skew the political conversation much further to the right than it should be.

  15. Fred Phelps Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket the funerals of the six people gunned down in Arizona on Saturday including that of the nine year old.

    The issued a poster saying:

Your federal judge is dead and your (fag-promoting, baby-killing, proud-sinner) Congresswoman fights for her life. God is avenging Himself on this rebellious house! WBC prays for your destruction–more shooters, more dead carcasses piling up, young, old, leader and commoner–all. Your doom is upon you!””

I see no difference between this type of terrorism than anybody caught with a bomb.

    The sick bastards!

  16. 21stCenturySpirituality 11 Jan 2011, 6:28am

@Jo Wildermuth…”Have you heard this guy had an alter in the back of his house to worship the occult – hardly right wing kind of behavior.” ….Err, Hitler?

  17. 21stCenturySpirituality 11 Jan 2011, 6:44am

@ Helen….oooh, those people are so wrong. That is about as far removed from the message of Christianity and the teachings of Jesus as it is possible to get. What happened to ‘Thou shalt not kill’ and ‘love thy neighbour’? Scum, absolute scum – I try avoid name calling in my remarks but thats the only sentiment that seems to fit that bunch of spiritual and ethical bankrupts.

  18. “the right wing has been the ones told to shut-up, sit down, and do not have an opinion that is different from the left!!”

I assume you have never watch Fox “News” from under that rock you’ve been living under all your life, Jo?

The only thing more pathetic than right wing religious nuts is one who is a complete whiner about their lack of right to persecute others.

  19. @Helen: great quote, but you buried the lead a bit there.

Mr Hernandez is gay and a hero. His decision to help the congresswoman, although it meant moving towards the shooter (when most people would be running away), probably saved Ms Giffords’ life.

Before anyone shouts ‘Oliver Sipple’, Mr Hernandez was out beforehand and has a public profile in Tucson LGBT activism.

  20. Steve@GayWebHosting 11 Jan 2011, 7:44am

Well, Palin has far too much gob for her own good. “Hockey-Mom” indeed…. and how does the ´hockey mom´ feel about the shooting of an innocent 9 yr old girl then?

Yes this shooter might well have mental issues.. That is the VERY reason why Palin should share some of the blame for the levels of political violence we are beginning to see..

Her ´appeal to the lowest common denominator´ whack-jobs rhetoric is at least partly the cause of such actions..

Instead of listening to all of these right-wing sickos, I prefer to listen to the actual VICTIM… The congresswoman herself was recently interviewed on TV (after her offices had been smashed-up) She herself condemned Palin and the right-wing incendiary language as having consequences…

Tragically, as we have seen… SHE was right!

Well done to Daniel Hernandez jr. Sounds like a true hero and a credit to all that is decent in Humanity!

  21. Check out the comments from ‘Harold’ on that page :o

I can’t believe that map’s till up. No, it wasn’t directly Palin’s fault, but she seems to stir up mentally ill people and goad them into action in a way that sometimes seems calculated.

  22. “No, it wasn’t directly Palin’s fault, but she seems to stir up mentally ill people and goad them into action in a way that sometimes seems calculated.”

Well said, Iris. If one inbred moron up a tweet telling people to “realod”, as Palin put it, s/he is quite rightly ignored (or offered mental health counselling), but this person is aiming to be a presidential candidate, and yet she behaves like a swamp hick with the IQ of a turnip. She should have more sense and civility for a person in her position. Reminds me of a managerial expression I hear once:- “promoted one level beyond their competence”…. in her case, more like 24 levels….

  23. From Sarah Palin’s chilling target page, with rifle sight cross hairs symbols and all…

“We’re paying particular attention to those House members who voted in favor of Obamacare and represent districts that Senator John McCain and I carried during the 2008 election. Three of these House members are retiring – from Arkansas’s 2nd district, Indiana’s 8th district, and Tennessee’s 6th district – but we’ll be working to make sure that those who replace them are Commonsense Conservatives. The others are running for re-election, and we’re going to hold them accountable for this disastrous Obamacare vote. They are: Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ-1), Harry E. Mitchell (AZ-5), Gabrielle Giffords (AZ-8), John Salazar (CO-3), Betsy Markey (CO-4). Allen Boyd (FL-2), Suzanne M. Kosmas (FL-24), Baron P. Hill (IN-9), Earl Pomeroy (ND-AL), Charlie Wilson (OH-6), John Boccieri (OH-16), Kathy Dahlkemper (PA-3), Christopher Carney (PA-10), John M. Spratt, Jr. (SC-5), Tom Perriello (VA-5), Alan B. Mollohan (WV-1), and Nick J. Rahall II (WV-3).

We’ll aim for these races and many others. This is just the first salvo in a fight to elect people across the nation who will bring common sense to Washington. Please go to SarahPalin.etc and join me in the fight.

Stand tall, America. Real change is coming!”

    – Sarah Palin

  24. Jo, I must say I’m puzzled with your statement that it’s the left in the USA who are speaking in such angry and hateful terms. Whilst I’m in the UK, I do consume a lot of American news and political information.
Two people who spring to my mind in pushing for violence are Sarah Palin and Sharron Angle (incidentally, both beloved by the Tea Party). Sharron Angle stated that if the right didn’t win at the ballot box they should look into “Second Amendment remedies” and as we know the Second Amendment is the right to keep and bear arms, the whole quote essentially advocated for the violent overthrow of those who have been legitimately elected.
Anyone sensible and reasonable would reject this as being over the top but to someone who is obviously disturbed this could conceivably be taken in an entirely different manner.
It was also the right who had previously attacked Rep. Gifford’s office (and many other Democratic Reps and Senators recently) and sent her hate mail.
It’s also rather telling that Sarah Palin’s “Cross-Hairs” campaign was removed within hours of the attempted assassination of Rep. Gifford, most of us would not have known about it if it wasn’t for Google caching and the sterling work of some in the media, largely on the left.

  25. “Reminds me of a managerial expression I hear once:- “promoted one level beyond their competence”…. in her case, more like 24 levels….”

I agree, Will. What I find scary about people like Sarah Palin is I’m never quite sure if they actually ARE incompetent/ignorant or whether they’re not but choose to aim their words at that very particular kind of paranoid, messed up person and appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I find both those alternatives very frightening. Personally, I think Palin was inspired by the nutty Youtube videos where some ‘patriot’ sits there caressing their gun and ranting about random ‘injustices’. I’m sure people like that would be easy votes for her. But I see absolutely no need for imagery linked to guns AT ALL.

  26. David in Indy 12 Jan 2011, 5:38am

I just read an article claiming the gun sales in Tuscon have doubled since this shooting, which if true is absolutely appalling. How is anything going to change for the better if more guns are introduced onto the streets? Arizona (along with the rest of the U.S.) is quickly becoming another “shoot-out at the OK Corral”.

Everyone packing heat, concealed weapons on half of our citizens, gunfights on every corner… is THAT the solution? Sorry, that doesn’t make me feel very safe. :-(

  27. That’s shocking, David in Indy.

  28. Mihangel apYrs 13 Jan 2011, 7:17am

why no mention of the guy who probably saved her life, Danial Hernandez – a young, gay, Latino-American

Let’s celebrate when our side does something noteworthy, our opposition gladly trumpet our failures
