EastEnders producers are planning a gay surrogacy storyline, it has been reported.

According to the Daily Mirror, gay characters Christian Clarke and Syed Masood will ask Glenda Mitchell to carry a baby for them.

The newspaper quoted an EastEnders source as saying: the storyline would be “one of the most controversial in the programme’s history”.

“Producers think it will be a ratings hit and prove a massive talking point among viewers,” the source added.

The BBC is currently being besieged with complaints after it included Stephen Green, a homophobic fundamentalist Christian as the sole interview in its television coverage of the birth of Elton John’s son to a surrogate.

The soap screened one of its most controversial storylines ever this Christmas as viewers saw character Ronnie Branning swap her dead baby with Kat Moon’s newborn son.

Three thousand viewers complained about the scenes and the actress who plays Ronnie, Samantha Womack, is said to have handed in her resignation today over the plotline.
