Parliamentary LGBT support network launches today
The UK legislature’s new lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender network, ParliOut will be launched tonight.
The group is the first equality network to be created in parliament. It will be chaired by Speaker John Bercow.
Mr Bercow said: “Parliament as a workplace should set an example in good practice when it comes to equality and diversity.
“Therefore I am delighted to be able to welcome the creation of the first LGBT network group – the first of the equality network groups to be set up on the parliamentary estate. This is another positive step towards breaking down barriers in the workplace.”
The network, a cross-party initiative, which is led by staff, will be chaired by a board including Chris Bryant MP, Stephen Gilbert MP and Margot James MP.
Deputy Commons Speaker Nigel Evans MP, who came out publicly this weekend, is also backing the group.
However, the Daily Mail reports this morning that Evans will miss the launch party at Speakers House.
According to the paper, he has been stranded by snow in New York since the weekend.
