  1. What other explanation is there for most cases of homophobia?

If Mr and Mrs Smith down the road practice BDSM it wouldn’t affect me one way or the other, unless that is, it was something I wanted to do myself but had always felt too inhibited to do. Then it would become an emotionally charged issue for me. I might even condemn them in my frustration.

  2. More of the “blame the victim” strategy. There is homophobia because most Christian churches teach homophobia, especially the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches.

  3. I think there’s more than one source of homophobia out there, for some it’s cultural conditioning and nothing more, then there’s the self loathing closet types typified by George Rekers and Ted Haggard, there’s those hung up on sex for reproduction (never for fun, god no, what gave you the idea sex could ever be recreational?) and those who just find it unappealing to themselves on a physical level. Naturally religion itself has a part to play in both but I wouldn’t put cultural indoctrination and self loathing in the same bracket every time.
That said there was that study by Prof Henry Adams…

  4. Homophobia is caused by homophobic Cathoilic doctrine (as Merlyn says above @2)
Although Catholic homophobia is not caused by self loathing gay Catholic priests it may well be perpetuated and implemented by them.

  5. Good on the bloke for speaking out, though I agree that there are many other causes of this.

  7. This explains it all, now we know why Rats is so homophobic, looks good in his dress though.

He is spot on. It is not about doctrine as that has to be explained and taught by individuals. The Church has explained many things away and could have done this with homosexuality. I spent four years in the religious life and it is more likely to meet up with Saints Peter and Paul in Kings Cross Sydney than it is to meet a heterosexual priest.

  10. Homophile??? Wow. Looks like he’s still steeped in their retorich and he still seems rather self hating, seeing as he himself was also part of the problem at one point. Although what proof he has that what he says is more than just conjecture is beyond me. I agree with merlyn on this. Obviously he’s a very damaged man and it sounds like he’s only half broken free from the church, whether he still believes or not. Homophile, wow…

  11. Apparently there’s a lot of these gay Vatican types about, and it goes right to the top… ;)

  12. Bull, they hate becasue they hate, suck it up and take it like a man. The Catholic church is a Church of hate, they give millions of dollars to stop gay marriage, everybody know this.
