  1. And this is Pinknews, why ???????

  2. Bad translation Pink News. Hijras are not eunuchs, they are men who dress and behave as women, the so called “third gender”, like the kathoeys in Thailand and the fa’afafines in Samoa, while eunuchs are just castrated men. And andy, this concerns Pink News because it’s about transgender people, the “T” in the LGBT community.

  3. They are truly an amazing phenomenon. You mess with them, or worse, ignore them, at your own peril. Read about them in William Dalrymple’s “City of Djinns.”

So nice to see something being done despite all of India’s problems with poverty. It’s not much, but it still makes our government look positively lazy by comparison.

  5. Andy: Heterosexuals confuse gay men with men that want to be women. To them we all belong to the same community. (Yes, sexual or gender orientation defines a community. They say so. It must be true.)
Who are you to think you have the right to define yourself regardless of heterosexual confusions? Let their confusion define your identity: you are a LGBT person. Whatever that means.

Bad misunderstanding Filipe. Hijra are not men, they identify either as women or as a third sex (and those who identify as women really resent being classed as anything else, like men, or a third sex). Some are transsexual, some intersex. Most have their own, traditional form of reassignment surgery which the cruel and misinformed, like Pink News, consider to make them eunuchs.

They are very different to the the traditional cultures in Thailand and Samoa (and in most lands where the Abrahamic religions have not erased past traditions). Each of these are different cultures with their own positive and negative aspects. The Hijra traditional surgery is not used elsewhere, for just one example.

Transgender is a very western, colonial concept, and it would be very wrong to erase the important cultural distinctions that go back millennia, by imposing it (or “gay”) on all those people.

The UN uses the phrase “sexual orientation and gender identity” as the way to avoid that problem when calling for an end to all of the common, overlapping or separate discriminations and hatreds that Pink News reports.

hijrahs are just ordinary transsexuals and nothing nonsensical like ‘third genders’. they have to have the castration due to lack of opportunity to get sex affirmation surgaery aka sex change.
Their ranks do not doubt contain a good number of effeminate homosexuals and TGs who chose the life ( would any sort fo homosexual chose castration?) for many reasons but aren’t genuine TS.
