“this is a piece of legislation that is needed in this country to protect the traditional family here in Africa…”

The fact that protecting the “traditional family” seems to be of more importance to him than pure religious factors or child molestation (stuff that tends to preoccupy homophobes in more primitive societies) just reeks of right-wing American evangelism. What bastards…

  2. Yep, US fundies were there spreading their hate. Evil, evil people.

  3. Unbelievable hatred . . .

  4. Wim in Holland 28 Oct 2010, 9:32pm

In this law “to protect the traditional family” this christian government will also punish people committing adultery, isn’t it ? Severely, I guess ?

  5. We need to protect civilization by nuking Uganda!

  6. Africa. What a joke.

  7. Send this bastard a hate email (dbahati@parliament.go.ug ), I already have.
Don’t have the courage or think it’s a stupid idea? Have a few pints or a few shots of vodka and you’ll think differently.

  8. David Bahati, your country will have to face the consequences if such a law is passed! Uganda’s tourist industry will be targeted which is very sad because eco-tourism is doing a lot of good for both animals and local communities. If foreigners don’t feel safe re privacy when visiting Uganda, then they will go elsewhere.

  9. It takes work and time, sisters. We have the time, and we’ll work the work. It’ll happen… in time.

If this law does come into effect then I fully expect the next headline to be:-

“Britain Halts All Aid To Uganda”

It’s about time the UK government showed some backbone with this issue.

  11. Through Transformation Ministries, Uganda is now covenanted to Jesus apparently.
And according to the bizarre legend promoted by fundamentalist Christians (see our Philippa Stroud in UK)… homosexuality is caused by demonic possession and is Satanic (OH MY SCIENCE!), this precludes the elimination of homosexuality and homosexuals obviously.

  12. “Yep, US fundies were there spreading their hate. Evil, evil people.”

    True.

But let’s lot kid ourselves that it is the US fundies’ fault.

Uganda’s savage and primitive homophobia is ENTIRELY their own responsibility. The fundies went there knowing that they would have a very appreciative and receptive audience. Savage homophobia is ingrained into Ugandan society.

ALL British aid to Uganda must halt if they legalise genocide there.

  13. Yep, I agree, suspend all Aid to Uganda the minute this law is passed.

  14. Can Bahati be charged with crimes against humanity for his role in introducing this anti-gay law?

  15. True, David. Fundies are certainly not the only cause. I was really responding to the first comment when I mentioned them. They fanned the flames of a fire that was already burning, I agree.

  16. You cannot ignore how Pastor Martin Ssempa has been inciting the nation to anti-gay genocide, showing specialist gay porn in his church etc. presumably an ongoing crusade to defame gays and incite hatred. “eating the poo poo” etc. here:

  17. I saw this on CNN yesterday. Horrible.

There was also a brief clip in that report of a twentysomething guy shouting bible passages in the middle of a busy street. Why doesn’t he get a job and contribute, you know, do something with his hands? So blatantly unproductive I got more angry at him than at the actual subject of that report. And yet the crazier he gets, the more people listen to him. How is this acceptable today? And I’m supposed to prop his screaming ass with my aid?!

Also, cholera hit the wrong country. Just sayin’.

  18. It is very true that US fundies have caused a lot of problems worldwide. They have also been instrumental in the recent backslide in Eastern European attitudes. They also started going in droves to China the second they started to open up a little and it is causing a backslide there as well. China of itself is not as large a threat as perceived by many. But they are probably the most important country in the world now. The larger threat is outside religion corrupting them, and others like Uganda, into the worst form of monsters as they emerge.

The most insidious and evil part of it all, beyond the pain and suffering it causes of course, is that any of them who actually have a decent seminary education know what liars they really are in preaching this non-existent non-traditional doctrine. Speaking as someone who was stupid enough to waste time getting educated and ordained only to find out things that I could not live with and stay with any middle eastern religion, Christian or otherwise. How I can identify with Anne Rice’s recent statement that she could not follow Jesus and be a Christian at the same time. The church’s attitude was always “forget what you know and focus on your ministry”, a ministry of lies, because they think they know what is best for people regardless of the truth of history or the personage they pretend to follow. Of course the real agenda is what is profitable – terrified, guilty, fearful, and poor and uneducated, give more money to religion. Politically they are also easily manipulated. A win/win for the tyrants of the world. Happy, well fed, free thinking people generally do not support religion, nor are they easily controlled, especially not if they are well educated.

I personally believe this underlying truth is also the real reason behind all the abuses, sexual and otherwise, within the church. If you stay in this enviroment knowing the truth, it destroys you and your sense of morality. I have never seen less morality than within the church itself and lately even they are having trouble denying it.

In the end our worst enemies though are often within our own ranks. As long as we back the right wing or remain inside religion we are a huge part of the problem, not the solution. We also need to stop paying lip service to false liberalism that tolerates intolerance!!. The academics of the world also need to stop being so afraid of loosing their tenure and speak up about what they know to be the truth as well. Before freedom is nothing but a dream anywhere in the world as imperial theocracy is growing at a much faster rate than the well educated free thinkers who can reign it in.

Africa has the highest rate of aides among heterosexual adults in the world.
Exactly what “family values” is Mr. Bahati referring to?

  20. westcoastkid 29 Oct 2010, 8:39pm

    Excuse please… (read) AIDS

The world have two things to do away with this country:
-Open the refugee door for LGBT
-Close financial aid doors to this goverment

  22. 21stCenturySpirituality 29 Oct 2010, 11:46pm

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”. – Martin Luther King.

  23. Stop the aid ! ! NOW !

  24. Har Davids 31 Oct 2010, 5:55am

Why threaten to stop the aid? It would be more impressive if no country where Human Rights don’t mean anything, were left to its own devices. Law or no law, Uganda is a country where homophobia is more then just Salonfähig. The aid-money could be spent on more deserving socities.

  25. Omar Kuddus 31 Oct 2010, 9:44pm

When is something to be done about Ugandas law.
Once in effect it will be too late and encouraging Homophobia, should be stoped by any means, and as with every African Nation the best way would be where it hurts most. In their pockets.
Ristricting and stopping financial Aid would effect the poletions the most, for they lose their “cut”.

  26. Giles Muhame, the managing editor of the newspaper, defended his story, saying it was his duty as a journalist to “expose the evil in our society”. The evil in their society are those who preach hatred and attempt to have people murdered because they are gay! I hate to say it but this african homophobia is spreading. Its a pity tthey don’t concentrate and issues such as famine and corruption and leave the gays alone!

  27. The Anti-Gay Bill when/if it becomes law will create a holocaust situaton and conditions for LGBT Ugandans.
What is the world doing about it?
We know there has been a lot of input from US Christian extremists and ex-gay promoters who heavily push the nonsense idea that homosexuality is a choice.
The Family, Scott Lively, Rick Warren, Ed Silvoso with his Harvest Evangelism… these people and many more like them have (and are still) playing their part in creating a gay holocaust situation not only in Uganda and other African countries but in many poor communities globally.
