A gay group is organising a kissing protest to greet Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Spain.

The Pope is to tour the country next month and Queer Kissing Flashmob says it will stage the demonstration in front of him during a procession.

Pope Benedict is due to make a short journey from Barcelona’s Plaza de la Catedral to the Sagrada Familia on Sunday, November 7th at 9am.

Carole Marylene, an organiser of the event, said the demonstration would protest against the Pope’s views on homosexuality.

She told Spanish news agency EFE: “When Benedict XVI passed before us, we’ll kiss, man with man or woman with woman.

“It is curious to note how an act so noble as a kiss can be considered revolutionary, even in the 21st century.”

Queer Kissing Flashmob claims that Facebook deleted an events page for the demonstration which 12,000 people had been invited to.

A new group has now been set up, with more than 900 Facebook users saying they will attend the kissing protest.

When the Pope visited the UK in September, 20,000 people gathered in central London with banners and blown-up condoms to protest against his response to the child abuse scandal, his homophobic comments about gay relationships and his claims that condoms spread rather than prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS.
