Gareth Thomas, the out gay former Welsh rugby captain, is planning to join a London rugby union team.

The star briefly switched to league team Crusaders this year and is due to play France in the Wales league squad this weekend.

He is now in talks with three London clubs for a move to the capital and back to union.

London Welsh says it does not have the budget or need for another wing or fullback but two other teams are said to be interested.

London Scottish has been in talks with Thomas and the club’s chief executive, Tony Copsey, told the Evening Standard: “We would love to have him but he is thinking over his options.”

Blackheath is also said to be interested in the former Welsh captain.

Since coming out as gay last December, the 36-year-old has seen his public profile soar.

He turned down a part on television’s Strictly Come Dancing but Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke is planning to make a film of his life.
