  1. Obama wouldn’t have to defend it if he’d got rid of it.

  2. Iris, exactly. Now I wonder if Cameron will uphold the exclusion of gay couples from civil marriage? He’s been rather silent since the election campaign and so have the majority in his party. Its up to us to make sure that we keep marriage equality on the front burner at all times, not leave it on the back burner or in the closet as Summerskill et al want.

  3. Obama is a disgusting worm , he lied to everyone promising change then defends this. He doesent have to protect it and he could get rid of soma ms daft for being unconstitutional but he is heartless as far as I’m concerned that or just another corrupt politician.

  4. What I don’t understand is that the judge who tried to get the federal ban applicable to Massachusetts said that allowing same-sex couples to marry in the state or any state for that matter, defines the definition of marriage. In my view it does not, it doesn’t change marriage as we know it, it doesn’t impact straight civil marriages one iota, in fact if anything, all it does is expand marriage to include gay people, nothing more, it doesn’t redefine marriage per se. The use of “define” or “redefine” are code words for “traditional” religious marriage. Nothing else changes. In a true democracy (the U.K. and U.S. among others aren’t), rights are expanded, not contracted. A lesson for Cameron and the Tories to learn when he’s finally confronted with a decision on marriage equality in the UK.

  5. This back and forth is the expected process. No one is surprised and Massachusetts is ready to defend the ruling. Unfortunately it’s election time, so all these controversial items will be played out a certain way — wink, wink. So far, it doesn’t appear the Dept of Justice will prevail, but nothing in America is for sure — so much wasted energy, get over it. There’s a lot of power that doesn’t want it to happen because of what it will open up across the country, and by God they have to keep those gays down. However, since states have the right to set their marriage laws which Mass. has done, then DOMA clearly discriminates against its citizens (and other Americans) by prohibiting equal marriage rights on the federal level. It will be interesting to see if it goes to the Supreme Court.

Must be the Mid-terms’ coming up.

If you think this is bad wait til Sarah Palin tries for office!

  7. Obama is such a disappointment.

For a so-called ‘fierce advocate’ LGBT rights he’s turned out to be a corrupt, oppoortunistic hypocrite.

  8. Obama employs White House Staff who believe being gay is a “lifestyle choice” so maybe it’s no great surprise:

Can you imagine what the reaction would have been if a Bush staffer referred to homosexuality as a “lifestyle choice”?

  9. This is just business as expected from the Black Reagan who masquerades as a Democrat because he can get elected that way. There is nothing in his Illinois past to indicate he was ever going to do anything for gay people at all. He is as he always was, in Hilary’s words “A Man With a Speech, and nothing more”. It was true then, and it is true now!. Anyone who expected anything different got caught up in the hype and did not do their homework. The biggest joke of all is that anyone thinks he is a Socialist, even does not even cross the center line on any issue. As for the rest of the Dems they need to grow some balls before it is too late.

The part that is truly pathetic and somewhat unexpected, is Obama has made every single mistake Clinton made in 1992-1994 in all the other areas as well and is very likely to cause the same Republican landslide in 2010 that we had in 1994. In other words the man is insane (definition of insanity: doing the same things expecting different results). Or should we just call him Jimmy Carter II?

If the Dems loose the house and/or senate we can all kiss the USofA goodbye because the worst depression in world history can be >banked< on, pun intended. Republicans always cause increased deficit because why they always talk about cutting spending they never cut the military or the cloak and dagger stuff and that is the largest chunk of all spending. They always drain the coffers with tax cuts to the people who do not need it, and who are only investing in other countries with it, etc. etc…. Economic collapse is imminent if they are in charge, the masses however have very short memories even of recent history and zero understanding of the underlying issues that cause the events.

Current Republican style thought has proven over and over, since the first major US economic collapse in 1837, to be helpful only to a handful of the thieves that pocketed the profits. Unlearned history will always repeat itself……… we are doomed….
