  2. What goes around comes around. Bye bye Luzhkov *waves*

Now doubt he was not fired due to homophobia.

Cash seems to be the devil in this matter.

  5. Any reason to believe the next mayor will be any less homophobic?

Yeah, call me a cynic, see if I care. :)

  6. VERY SAD NEWS! A GOOD MAN LEAVING THE OFFICE!

@Leo: I beg to differ. There are plenty of corrupt non-homophobes as well.

  8. Good riddance.

Out of curiosity was the mayor elected (like happens in London) or was he appointed mayor in 1992?

If he’s been elected then it shows how dodgy Russian ‘democracy’ is, that he can be fired by the president.

Either way this guy is no loss.

Just did some Wiki’ing. He was appointed mayor in 1992 after the then current mayor resigned due to poor handling of the city. Since then, however, he’s been continuously re-elected by the voters. Although, the last election mentioned in his article is 2003. Seeing as how their elections seem to be every 3-4 years, that does seem a bit odd…

Either way, he was critical of President Medvedev, which just makes his removal all the more dodgy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the disgusting bigot is gone. I just wish it wasn’t thanks to Russia having such power-hungry leaders.

Addendum (also from Luzhkov’s Wiki article): “In recent years, the Kremlin had consistently been replacing old regional heads, appointed already during Boris Yeltsin’s time, with younger candidates. Pundits had been predicting Luzhkov’s imminent ousting for years.”

Yep, definitely sounds like some dodgy power play going on.

  11. Thank god! And thanks to the PN for good news.

I really want to believe. Because I live Russia :(
