They keep trotting this news out in a vain attempt at being heard I guess.

The most dangerous people they need to reach is those, both straight and gay, who have absolutely no desire to find out yet will keep acting irresponsibly. In the end it is these people that although are a minority, do gay people the damage because attitudes towards HIV always focuses on those individuals, not the rest of us that don’t act this way.

This is a gross misrepresentation of the facts. Pink News should be ashamed for such poor reporting. According to the CDC’s own report:

Finally, these findings are limited to men who frequented MSM-identified venues (most of which were bars [45%] and dance clubs [22%]) during the survey period in 21 [metropolitan statistical areas] with high AIDS prevalence; the results are not representative of all MSM. A lower HIV prevalence (11.8%) has been reported among MSM in the general U.S. population.

  3. There is no indication that the staff writer responsible for this item agrees with the results of the survey. PinkNews need not be ashamed….er….at least not in this case.

Statistics are what they; nothing less and certainly nothing more.

  4. And what about heteros? Or is this another homophobic survey/study to try and get the masses think we are a tiny minority of infected abominations.

  5. @Leo – according to the NHS 41% of HIV infections are through sex between men. The government estimates that about 3% of the population (1.95m) is a gay or bi man.

The other 59% of infections are among the remaining 97% (63.05m) of the population. So gay men are more likely to be affected by HIV than the general heterosexual population to a quite staggering degree. I don’t have time to work out the figure but gay men must be something like thirty times more likely to be HIV+ than the average heterosexual man or woman?

However, there’s more… The other group mainly affected are black Africans in the UK. The Terrence Higgins Trust states that “around 80% of all diagnoses of HIV [in the UK] are among gay men and people from black African communities”.

So to suggest in any way that the general heterosexual population is as equally affected as gay men (and black Africans) are is extremely misleading.

  6. “The government estimates that about 3% of the population (1.95m) is a gay or bi man.”

Where did you get this figure?

  7. So another Gay-bash from Pink. Where are your statistics about how many STRAIGHT men are positive but don’t know / care ???

Methinks you are going for headlines not stories. Please tell your ‘Staff Writer’ to go on a ‘balanced reporting’ refresher …

  8. @ Will – I get the 3% figure from here:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2005/dec/11/gayrights.immigrationpolicy

In 2005 the UK government estimated the number of LGB people at 6%. So about half would be male. But if you prefer I can use the latest figures which suggest just 0.75% of men are gay or bi?

@Dionysian – I think you’re in denial. Could the focus on gay men be because gay men are something like 30x more likely to be HIV+ than the average heterosexual man or woman?

What kind of ‘balanced’ report would you like to see? You mean one that lies and suggests everyone is at equal risk? How would that help gay men?

  9. These aRe fact people. Accept it. Gays are the irresponsible piGs for the main spread of HIV
