Lesbian Coronation Street characters Sophie Webster and Sian Powers will be condemned by a Christian preacher in an upcoming episode.

The couple, who feature in the soap’s first lesbian storyline, will be told by an angry church leader that their relationship is “shameful” and “sinful”.

According to the People newspaper, he will tell the couple: “God considers women who choose unnatural relationships over natural ones to be guilty of shameful lust. God puts temptation in our way to test us, but people like you who abandon God in deceit are sinful in his eyes.”

Sian will reply: “I thought we were all supposed to be equal in the eyes of God.”

The scenes will be screened in November and will reportedly see Sophie worry whether she should continue the relationship.

This month, Coronation Street sees another burst of homophobia as Ken Barlow’s long-lost son Lawrence discovers that his own son James is gay.

A Coronation Street source said: “Lawrence hates gays and Ken is disgusted by his attitude. These scenes are explosive, raw and hard-hitting. Viewers, whether they like the language or not, will be gripped.
