New students reminded to look at gay-friendly university guide

Gay and lesbian students who get their A Level results this week are being reminded to make use of a guide to the most gay-friendly universities.

The guide, called Gay By Degree and compiled by gay charity Stonewall, rates most of the UK’s universities for how welcome they make LGB students feel.

It also provides information on whether institutions have an LGBT society, if LGB-specific careers advice is given and whether staff are trained in diversity issues.

Thousands of teenagers will find out their results tomorrow and a larger number than usual are expected to go through clearing after failing to get the grades they need.

Luke Tryl, Stonewall’s education officer, said: “We launched this online guide last month and we’ve already had very positive feedback. Because it’s the first of its kind, many lesbian, gay and bisexual people have contacted us saying they wish it was around when they were applying to uni.

“Now we want to make sure it’s used by those pupils who are deciding where to take their talent and tuition fees.”
