A flight attendant who became fed-up with rude passengers quit his job yesterday in a way that most disgruntled employees can only dream of.

JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater lost his temper when a passenger refused to obey his instructions on a plane just landed at JFK International Airport at noon yesterday.

Witnesses said that the unnamed woman knocked him on the head with her luggage and swore at him.

Mr Slater, 38, then got on the public-address intercom and “let loose a string of invective”, the New York Times reports.

Reports said he announced: “To the passenger who called me a mother-f***er, f*** you. I’ve been in this business 28 years. And that’s it, I’m done.”

He then grabbed his luggage and a beer before activating the emergency escape route, sliding down and racing to his car.

He drove home to his house in Queens, where police swiftly followed to arrest him.

Mr Slater was charged with criminal mischief, trespassing and reckless endangerment.

He has become something of an internet hero, with 14,000 people joining a Facebook group in his honour.
