Argentina held its first weddings for gay couples last week.

The country became the first in Latin America to legalise gay marriage last month and the first couples to take the advantage of the new legislation did so on Friday.

The first couple to use the new law were Miguel Angel Calefato, 65, and Jose Luis Navarro, 54, who have been together for 27 years. They wed in the northern town of Frias.

Many more couples were expected to marry over the weekend.

The law grants gay and lesbian couples full legal equality, including tax and inheritance benefits, plus the right to adopt children.

It amends marriage laws to refer to the “marrying parties”, rather than men and women.
In December, a gay couple were given permission to marry in Argentina before the law was changed.

Alejandro Freyre and Jose Maria Di Bello married in Tierra del Fuego province after officials allowed them to.
