Roseanne actress Sara Gilbert has announced she is a lesbian.

The star, who played Darlene Conner-Healy in the 1990s, was not exactly in the closet, as she has two children with TV producer Allison Adler.

She has been with Adler for eight years but had never discussed her sexuality in public until she was asked about it at a press conference for her new talk show.

Gilbert responded: “This is a whole new world for me. I’m not an expert on this, or I don’t analyse these things. I’m just sort of living my life.”

But she added that she was not nervous about her sexuality being known.

“I don’t think [being out] will be a problem,” she said. “I don’t ever really think of things as being out or in… I just think I am who I am, and when topics come up that are appropriate, I’ll talk about them and share when it seems right.”

Gilbert will be co-presenting a talk show on women and motherhood called The Talk.

She added that she wanted to come out during the press conference as coming out in a press release seemed “impersonal”.
