Well, obviously excellent. I am pruriently wondering whether ‘celibate’ in the C of E currently means ‘celibate’ or ‘I am being diplomatic’ or ‘we shagged for years until it turned more or less platonic’ or some sort of Monica Lewinsky type of definition of not having sex.
I know it’s none of my business which of the above it is. But I would be sad if his lack of a sex life was connected to his Christianity. And it will be sad that if he gets the job, it’ll take his celibacy to stop the church having another schism moment over it.
Still, Thatcher landed us with George Carey – lets hope Cameron can even up the balance by delivering Jeffrey John.

Yes, absolutely right qv – and you just wouldn’t get the equivalent in straight society – a man who publically announced that he was, for whatever reason, no longer choosing to shag his wife would be regarded as an ungracious arse.
The appointment of a now asexual man, albeit in a CP, to a bishopric, would not be much of an advance, if any. Effectively the first English “Gay” bishop would be pretty much a self-loathing one.
This of course underlines one of the little remarked differences between CPs and marriages: a CP has no connection with love, romance, or sex, its just a financial contract. If a marriage isn’t consummated it can be declared null. If a partner refuses sex, or has sex outside the marriage it is grounds for divorce. Not so with CPs. Those are pretty huge differences, making the insistence of UK law to only treat foreign same-sex marriages as CPs in UK law highly unjust, and would make it pretty difficult to do in the Uk what Iceland just did – instantly convert domestic partnerships into marriages – because the terms of the contracts are so different.
Have not those *** supporting Jeffrey John read the Bible? Has not John read the Bible? Have not those promoting him read the Bible? Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind. It is abomination! There is too much abomination around.

He is now in a legal civil partnership rather than just sharing another man’s farter. The queen will be okay with that.

Whether celibate means celibate or secret, it still means “I am prepared to say in public that gay sex is not all right for a christian.”
