Police are appealing for witnesses after a gay couple were abused, threatened and assaulted by a man on a London bus.

The attack took place on Tuesday June 8th, shortly after midnight, when the couple were about to board the route 87 bus near the corner of Queenstown Road, Wandsworth.

A man who followed them onto the bus began verbally abusing them. He then sat behind them on the lower deck and continued to shower them with homophobic abuse.

Police say he stood up when the bus had reached Snappy Snaps in Lavender Hill and made hand gestures to the victims that implied he had a gun and would shoot them.

The suspect then hit one of the victims on the head with a silver object causing a cut which later required eight stitches. He got off the bus and walked in the direction of Clapham Junction.

He was described as a black man aged between 20 and 25 and 6ft 2ins tall. He was wearing a black hat and a black padded jacket.

Police are also expected to study CCTV images from the time of the incident.

Detective Constable James Vinnicombe, of Wandsworth Community Support Unit, said: “This was an awful attack on a gay couple who were simply making their way home after enjoying a night out socialising.

“It is unacceptable that they were abused and attacked in this way and I am appealing to anyone who was on the bus and witnessed the abuse or the assault to contact the police.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 0208 247 5418, or to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
