Golden Girls actress Rue McClanahan has died at the age of 76, her manager confirmed this afternoon.

The star, who played Blanche Devereaux in the 1980s sitcom, had a massive stroke at 1am on Thursday morning.

Her manager Barbara Lawrence told People magazine she “went in peace” surrounded by her family in a New York hospital.

McClanahan suffered a minor stroke earlier this year after heart bypass surgery.

She began her stage career in the 1950s, winning roles in television shows All in the Family and Maude in the 1970s.

She is the third of the four Golden Girls stars to pass away in the last few years. Estelle Getty died in 2008 while Bea Arthur died last year. Betty White, 88, is still acting.
