Gaydio to launch on 18 June

Gaydio, a brand-new Manchester-based radio station dedicated to LGBT listeners, will launch on Fri 18 June.

The station will boradcast online and on 88.4FM in the Greater Manchester area, making it the UK’s first dedicated LGBT FM station.

Afternoon shows will be hosted by former Galaxy breakfast host Nicksy, and former Happy Mondays vocalist Rowetta will present the evening slots.

Initially conceived in 2006 by Ian Wallace and Toby Whitehouse to accompany the Manchester Pride festival, the station broadcast four pilots before succesfully obtaining a licence to broadcast 365 days a year. In their press release, Gaydio said they planned to broadcast “a mixture of upbeat music and targeted speech. . . 24 hours a day.”

Mr Wallace, who is the station’s business director, said that interest in the station in Manchester was “huge”.
