  1. I once had the misfortune of going to an open day at the Institute of Education in London, the institute looking for potential teachers. The session was led by the head of the PGCE course who barefaced stated the reputation school kids have in terms of bad behaviour was all a concoction by the media. This from an academic who’s probably never been inside a classroom. Its only the teachers that can be relied on for reporting the facts and my friends who are teachers said homophobia is rife in schools in the south west as much as the north. And this homophobia is directed as much at the teachers as it is as the pupils.

  2. The problem exists here in Canada as well.

Egale Canada has launched a promising program:

  3. So why is it a ‘shock’? It’s no secret that homophobia is rife in schools and that teachers are often complicit or complacent in the face of it. Schools are jungles. It’s time they were tackled.

schools are expected to socialise as much as teach subjects to fit pupils for life in the adult world especially at work. They are signally failing, possibly due to SATS, possibly a hangover from S28, possibly because this element of a teacher’s role isn’t covered during training.

    Whatever.

We need our youing people to be taught what is acceptable behaviour from an early age, because (apart from kids bullying others) they will eventually have to operate in the grown up world where either they have to go through “interpersonal” training or they get disciplined.

  5. REward and punishment. And consistent homophobic behavior should be grounds for throwing out of school brats who can’t change their behavior.

Just no fooling around. And maybe you can organize gay-straight alliances like some of the USA schools have. Sponsored by GLESN.

And since girls are usually much better regarding not being homophobic, there needs to be a culture change – homophobic boys simply don’t get dates, and the girls that do date them talk aboutthier tiny dicks, how they came in their pants etc.

  6. School children see, hear and repeat – Monkey see monkey do – At home kids hear parents spout homophobic slurs – the kids think this is ‘grown-up’ they repeat at school and the cycle continues – The Press & Music industry – Comics – TV & Film writers don’t help either when every person of note is prefixed with ‘Gay’ sports man ‘Gay actor – Gay politician – It ain’t Rocket science people!
