The friends of a Scottish 16-year-old found dead last week say they believe he may have been killed in a homophobic attack.

Jack Frew was found near a cycle path in Mossneuk, East Kilbride, last Thursday at around 7pm. His throat had been cut.

His friend, 17-year-old Craig Roy, was also injured in the attack and was released from hospital on Friday.

A 17-year-old man was arrested last night.

Police have not commented on a motive for the attack but one of Mr Frew’s friends suggested that the out gay teenager could have been killed because of his sexuality.

Calum Murray, 16, told the Daily Mirror: “We think it has been a homophobic incident. It is absolutely disgusting.

“There’s a lot of homophobia in Scotland and plenty of people that would take it further.”

Mr Murray added: “Jack came out about a year or two ago. He was the nicest guy and so popular. I can’t emphasise that enough. He had so many friends, guys and girls.

“There are thousands of teenagers in East Kilbride but none will be missed as much as Jack. Everybody knew him. Some people were bitchy about him but when they met him they all thought he was great. Jack would never say a bad word about anyone and wouldn’t harm a fly.”

Mr Frew was a student at Duncanrig secondary school in East Kilbride.

Headteacher George Wynne described him as popular and respected, adding: “He is a great loss to our school community. We grieve for him and his family who are in our thoughts as they come to terms with the loss of their son and brother.”
