An activist who campaigned for gay and disabled rights has died after he was hit by a New York taxi.

Harry Wieder, 57, died on Monday evening when he was hit by the vehicle as he left a meeting on the Lower East Side.

Authorities believe the activist, who had a form of dwarfism and used crutches to get around, may not have been visible to the driver as he crossed the road.

He was pronounced dead in hospital.

Mr Wieder once described himself as a “disabled, gay, Jewish, leftist, middle aged dwarf who ambulates with crutches”.

He became well-known in the community for his advocacy work after coming out in the 1980s.

He was born to Holocaust survivors and was brought up in the Queens neighbourhood of the city.
