The lesbian teenager who won a court victory against her Mississippi school for its prom policy says she was sent to a “fake” event so other students would not have to see her with her girlfriend.

Constance McMillen told the Advocate that she was invited to what was supposed to be an “inclusive” prom for Itawamba Agricultural High School but when she arrived, she and her girlfriend found only five other students there.

Instead, she said, her classmates were celebrating at a secret party organised by parents which she was not invited to.

Ms McMillen sued her school last month after it cancelled the prom rather than let her attend the event with her girlfriend.

The judge ruled the school had violated her right to freedom of expression but did not force it to reinstate the cancelled prom, saying he was satisfied with the private one which was to be open to all.

But Ms McMillen said: “They had two proms and I was only invited to one of them. The one that I went to had seven people there, and everyone went to the other one I wasn’t invited to.”

She said she had asked one of the students organising the event where it was being held, and was told to go to a country club in Fulton.

But the student added that two of the seven at the “inclusive” prom were disabled students.

Ms McMillen said: “They had the time of their lives. That’s the one good thing that come out of this, [these kids] didn’t have to worry about people making fun of them [at their prom].”
