US comedy Desperate Housewives is to get its first lesbian relationship.

Highly-strung Katherine Mayfair will be seduced by her new flatmate after dreaming about sleeping with her.

Katherine, played by Dana Delaney, discovers her new friend is a stripper and the pair go out on the town, pretending to be lesbians to avoid male attention.

But in a later episode, they get carried away and end up in bed together.

The love scenes follow a dream sequence in which Katherine imagines undressing Robin, played by Julie Benz.

Desperate Housewives has had a number of gay male characters but this is the first lesbian relationship for the programme.

Last year, Gabrielle (Eva Longoria) and Susan (Teri Hatcher) locked lips after Susan was surprised by an admiring workmate.

Benz said: “The girls are all so fun to work with and have welcomed me with open arms. I’m so thrilled that there is such a buzz about my character’s relationship with Dana’s.”

She added that the love scene was “really beautiful and was so fun to shoot”.

In January, it was revealed that gay actor John Barrowman has been lined up to play a villain in the show.

He said he would appear in five episodes, adding: “I’ve been told by Marc [Cherry, creator of Desperate Housewives] that I will affect every one of the women in some way.”

Barrowman has also revealed he is in talks with the producers of hit television comedy Glee to appear on the show.
