Difficult to know what to make of this one to be honest.

I agree with assisted suicides, (when done in a proper medically controlled manner as in Switzerland) and I also believe that I should have the right to choose when I ´go´.

But, if the circumstances were as stated, this was not assisted. Under the strict terms of the law, this would have been murder, (if) it happened at all? (Which is probably how the Crown Prosecution Service will view it in the end)

Having watched my partner die of lung cancer, I don’t even want to think about commenting on what Ray Gosling did then or now. Seeing someone you love suffer and die is probably the most traumatic thing you can go through (apart from suffering and dying yourself) and we all cope in our own ways for our own reasons. I just hope he is dealt with compassionately by the law and by society.
(Creepy that the two anti-spam words I have to type are “sacredly” and “prison.”)

SimonM: Having read your comment, in retrospect maybe you are right. The CPS said it wasn’t going to charge people that took their loved ones to that clinic in Switzerland. Ultimately though, it all ends up with the same result, whether you pull a plug, inject them with a lethal dose or use a pillow, you are only hastening the inevitable, and I think that is how it should be viewed.

I suspect there is going to be an almighty response from carers, Catholics, pro-lifers and doctors though. This is far from over yet.

Obviously, you cannot go around smothering people with pillows. However, in this case, I wonder if you could get a jury to convict. I don’t think he should have done it, but at the same time I would not like to see him to go to jail for fourteen years.

Gosling has been naive. There are some secrets that must be taken to the grave. Yet Gosling’s friends apparently knew about this at the time. His producers (of the recent TV programme) should have refused to show the clip of his confession. There is no corpus delicti, no evidence, and no witness. Only Gosling’s confession which is almost certainly not enough to mount a prosecution. I do not believe it is in the public interest for Gosling to be prosecuted. Gosling may have imagined that he was contributing to the current debate about “assisted suicide”. He was wrong if he thought that, because what he has described (if it was true) was not an assisted suicide.
