Has nobody heard of the Sacred Band of Thebes anymore? Or some minor military functionary called Alexander the Great? Or, if one’s tastes run to something a little bit less classical in nature, how about, say, the British military in 2010?

  2. ‘He confessed his sexual orientation’
Isn’t this way of reporting rather old fashioned?
    There was nothing to confess!
    He declared his sexual orientation.

Sadly America is one big messed up place. What is wrong with America can largely be placed on the feet of the Christianist Republican right wing. With a 24 hour political spin machine feeding the ignorant masses (Fox News) partisan spins on nearly issue as fact. For whatever reason, the Democrats cannot or are unwilling to take them on… DADT is an example of the American political environment whereby anti science, anti intellectual political forces are at work. Sadly, President Obama has shown a lack of leadership
on so many issus of importance to gays. If DADT is not repealed this year it won’t likely occur anytime soon as the Repugs are likely to take back control of Congress and with that their ignorant bible thumping bigoted agenda of gay bashing in the name of Jesus will return.

There is never a “good” time to grant ANY minority their civil rights. What you are seeing is the last expiring gasp of the conservative wealthy white male protestant oligarchy in the US, and they are NOT going to go quietly.

We are DESPERATE for translators fluent in Middle Eastern languages … so the military discharges them for being gay, after spending MILLIONS of dollars on their training.

Our big, butch, straight (NOT!) soldiers are TERRIFIED that somebody might look at their junk in the shower. From the looks of those screaming the loudest about it, one would have to carry a magnifying glass. Please! Gay men have TASTE! We don’t sleep with / lust after everything male any more than heterosexual men sleep with / lust after everything female.

thanks. i understand i am a vet too, and 100% disabled and i feel cheated too. homophobia has no place anywhere especially in a democracy

  7. Thanks to brave servicemen like Lewis who are coming forward to tell thir story, the public will be able to see how stupid and cruel DADT is.

Well done Lewis – and thanks for shring your story.

  8. It is about time the United States caught up witht the rest of the Western Nations..

“For the Navy to discharge decent sailors while we let thieves and drunkards slip through the cracks in times of manpower shortage is no way to keep discipline.”

This entire article is quite a piece of writing. A real education.

Oh, and I understood that Alexander the Great was not aware that he had killed off the Sacred Band of Thebes until after the battle, and that’s why he had the monument of a Lion set up at the battle’s site. But that’s neither here nor there.

    Yes, an excellent article.

  12. the diversity in the military should reflect the diversity in the country they protect. Yet again the religious right wing have forced people under ground for their own protection. Respect and acceptance for diversity should be at the forfront of religious doctrine. If you believe in “Creation” and that God created everything then you should also be able to stand back and look at the diversity of nature. The animal kingdom also has homosexual creatures…..all part of the infinite diversity of nature, celebrate the diversity don’t ridicule it. besides….I AM SICK AND TIRED OF PEOPLE THAT THINK THEY CAN PERSICUTE OTHERS BECAUSE THEY SAY THAY HAVE A DIRECT LINK TO GOD.

  13. The Greeks knew that an army of lovers cannot fail…..
What happens to an army of paranoid bigots who sack professional experts because of whom they sleep with?

  14. Gay activist Paul Mitchell 18 Feb 2010, 12:23pm

Greece is also another country that also has a anti-gay policy in the military as does the USA – go figure!!!!!!

    AGAIN:

Australia, UK, Uruguay, Argentina, New Zealand, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, Luxemborge, etc, etc, etc.

ALL FULLY ALLOW OPENLY GAY PEOPLE IN ITS MILITARY – GOT THAT OBAMA!!!!!!!

Get with it USA – it it is 2010 for heaven sake the DADT policy is shameful, disgraceful and holding-back resources within the military SO GET RID OF THIS DUMB POLICY THAT WAS WRITTEN BY A STUPID AND INGORANT TEXAN IN 1992!!!!!

Obama if you want proof about gays in the military look no further than the ADF (Australian Defence Forces), so take a plane trip “down under” talk with our troops stationed here or better still come up to Erina near Gosford (just north of Sydney) or Holsworthy army base (just south of Sydney) and I will personally show you some hard-working military guys that cause NO ALARM who are gay men and are fighting for our freedoms!!!!!

  15. Our USA military is streched to the breaking point, fighting two wars against religious terrorism. While the Brass and Pr. Obama could simply say that they will defer any decisions on gay service members coming Out for 20 years.

the Alternative is to have 50 or 75000 gay members of our military come out en mass, and demand release under DADT.

And the law will change really quickly. And the republican assholes will face a real dilemma – country or hatred.

And for the old foggie Generals, Obama can simply, as commander in chief, tell them that their service is no longer wanted, and dismiss them immediately.

  16. jonnielondon 17 Mar 2010, 4:22pm

    @ Paul Mitchell

Hey, Paul. Don’t forget to add little Canada to your list. We also have our servicemen openly attend our gay Pride parades in full uniform with complete approval by their commanding officers.

We also have gay police officers that are out, as well as officers that train them who are out.
