Nominees for the most gay-friendly films, television programmes and performers have been announced by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

The group hands out awards annually for “outstanding images of the LGBT community” in the media.

The biggest names among this year’s nominations are Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert, new comedy Glee, Mad Men and Quentin Crisp documentary An Englishman in New York.

In a statement, GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios said: “Words and images matter. With these awards, we seek to recognise news coverage and entertainment programming that go beyond stock stereotypes with LGBT storylines that more fully reflect the challenges gay and transgender people face and the aspirations we hold for ourselves and our families.

He added that the awards set a “fairness benchmark” for the news and entertainment industries.

The winners’ ceremonies will be held in March, April and June at four separate locations.

Last year’s victors included Desperate Housewives, the film Milk and lesbian presenter Ellen Degeneres.
