Iris Robinson receiving psychiatric treatment after accusations of two more affairs

Homophobic MP Iris Robinson is said to be receiving “acute psychiatric treatment” as allegations of affairs with two other men emerge.

It was revealed last week that Robinson, 60, had an affair with 19-year-old Kirk McCambley and allegedly secured him loans of £50,000 to start a business without disclosing the loans or her interest in them to authorities.

It has also been reported that she had an affair with McCambley’s father, a butcher who died of cancer. She had known Kirk McCambley since he was nine and had promised his father she would look after him before he died.

The other man she is alleged to have had an affair with was a fellow DUP politician. The affair with the unnamed MP was said to have taken place in the 1980s and was witnessed by security personnel.

Today, a DUP spokesman denied reports she had flown for a skiing holiday in the French alps and said she was in a Belfast hospital.

Her husband Peter Robinson, Northern Ireland’s first minister, is fighting to keep his job after allegations he knew about the loan to McCambley but did not tell authorities about it.

He has asked for an inquiry into his conduct and will appear before DUP assembly members and party officers at Stormont this week.

Iris Robinson is expected to step down from her position as Assembley member and MP for Strangford in the next few days.

She broke parliamentary rules by not declaring her interest in the business, despite sitting on the council which awarded the money to Kirk McCambley, it was claimed.

According to a BBC Spotlight programme broadcast last Thursday, she also demanded a £5,000 kickback from McCambley for helping arrange the transaction.

Several days after Christmas, she released a statement saying she would be leaving politics due to mental ill-health. A week later, news of the affair broke.

Robinson provoked outrage in the summer of 2008 for claiming that gays were an “abomination” but could be cured.
