While it is unquestionably crucial for every gay or lesbian person to be ‘out’, it is of even greater importance for those of us who are, to recognise the role model of good citizenship that this visibility imposes.

Our higher than average association with risk taking behaviours such as unsafe sexual practice and substance abuse, together with the perception of a fundamental dishonesty created by years of lying about our sexuality and all that connotes, seriously undermine our public credibility and make it all the harder for us to convince the ruling straight majority that we are worth bothering about.
