David Bowie album ‘the gayest ever made’
David Bowie’s fifth album has been rated the “greatest, gayest” record of all time.
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which he made in 1972, topped a poll by Out magazine.
The magazine said: “It’s ironic that an album with an opener forecasting Earth’s expiration and a closer tackling celebrity excess and self-destruction remains one of the most liberating, uplifting records of all time – about as ironic as a straight man topping this list.”
It asked more than 100 actors, comedians, musicians, writers, critics, performance artists, label reps, and DJs, to list the most important albums of their lives.
Rufus Wainwright, Cyndi Lauper, Boy George and Perez Hilton were among the respondents.
They picked records by Elton John, kd lang and George Michael, although many of those on the list were by straight artists.
Boy George said of Bowie’s album: “Bowie as Ziggy created a world where the possibilities were limitless. You could be whatever you wanted to be.”
