"Minister for social and family affairs Mary Hanafin said she would seek the changes as soon as possible."

Does Pink News not consider it at all significant what changes those are intended to be, reporting it in this manner? In the UK we got landed, perhaps forever with a terrible law that only allows the legal recognition that is our right under a hard-fought European Court of Human Rights judgment at the price of multiple denials of vital privacy, which is far too high a price for those with the most intense need to transition. Also required by the UK law is a psychiatric diagnosis of a lifelong mental disorder, which is another gross breach of human rights. Those who are married before are also forced to divorce. And under-18s are barred.

The denials of privacy include having to provide deeply embarrassing sexual information for a file which is retained permanently, and is likely to end up in the Public Records Office; being listed on special register of questionable security accessed by many agencies; being easily identified on the public indexes of birth registrations by having two birth registrations; being issued with a new certificate that is easily identified by anyone familiar with birth certificates as issued due to "gender recognition"; there being no provision for previous records to be either updated or sealed, with even government databases having provision to reveal transition by recording "birth gender" and "present gender".

Whether Ireland is going to imitate those failings, add more of their own, or make improvements, should surely be reported by a news organisation claiming to be "LGBT".

However, Ireland's governing party Fianna Fail was concerned that some people may try to change their gender in order to seek more financial entitlements, such as welfare payments.
That has to be the sorriest comment and excuse I've heard yet.Their comment would imply and also mean that some would do so just to get out of paying support or anything like that. How many politicians worldwide would take such measures considering the financial and emotional costs just for a benefit that would end up costing alot more?
I think politicians are smarter then that but then again look at all the groups and organizations trying to invoke their perception and way of life on others.Who more or less threaten politicians of trying to make sure they don't get reelected.
Makes one wonder who actually is in control of rights, freedoms, liberty and justice.Government or organizational concepts and beliefs?

The Civil Partnership Bill in Ireland is being debated this Thursday, December 3rd at 6.45pm.

LGBT Noise and Marriage Equality are organising a picket of Parliament to raise awareness of the fact that the Bill is a discriminatory, half-measure specifically designed to deny gay couples access to civil marriage.

Weirdly they will be joined in their protest by Family Solidarity - a pack of foaming-at-the-mouth bigots who want the Bill scrapped as it 'damages' marriage.

Weird that the 2 groups should be on the same side despite the clear differences.

Just an indication of how the new Civil Partnership Bill is going to satisfy no-one but the governing party and GLEN (the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network - Ireland's version of Stonewall - who are equally out of touch with that the community they claim to represent actually want)

Get down to the Dail on Thursday at 6pm - it would be awful if there were more christian lunatics protesting than gayfolk.

what do you expect from Fianna Fail? they're in the pocket of the Catholic Church still and we know the Church has a problem with Trannies (but not as much of a problem as they do with Pedophiles.)

Anyway to echo the sentement - good on the Greens.

Anyway good for the Green party for raising this.

"However, Ireland's governing party Fianna Fail was concerned that some people may try to change their gender in order to seek more financial entitlements, such as welfare payments."

Nobody would want to claim they are trans just to gain a few euros how stupid. Nobody would want to face the daily discrimination trans people face.

Such a shame the Irish government did not speak out against the Catholic churches child abuse as quickly as it has trans people.

Theotherone, I agree with you that posts like that one by Rahman ought to be left up there so that their idiocy is evident to everyone. We ought not to be censoring anyone, that's what the bigots want to do with us, we ought not to adopt the same behaviour.

everyone does it to get benefits because two days of intense pain, lying on your back unable to move for a week and a 3 to 5 month recovery is the sort of thing you do just to get extra benefits isn't it?

What a shame Rahman's post was deleted - we need to allow idiots the full light of day so we can see just how silly they are.

Pink News is probably racist for removing his comment.

Do you not find it ironic Rahman that all the worlds major religions are led by men in dresses.

The fact the founder of your religious sect (Mohamed) was a paedophile who married a child.

Who is mentally ill again?

Theotherone, actually the last para of the article is priceless, the fear of Fianna Fail ("Soldiers of Destiny" in English!) that there'll be hordes of people rushing to change sex just so they can pick up welfare benefits!
