Good to hear about this initiative,

And will the reds and blues above stop bickering about who is the most gay friendly? Both Tory and Labour parties just love religion, and give privilege to religious opinions. Neither are remotely helpful to LGBT interests.

Sarah Brown, Rose and oatc raise some rather worrying points about the PFC's POV. I sincerely hope this is just a (pretty big) misunderstanding on our part...

Sarah Brown:
>> Professor Stephen Whittle, president of trans group Press
>> For Change, told Metro: "We welcome wholeheartedly this move.
>> When children are stifled through bullying they are more likely
>> to feel gender reassignment is their only option later in life."
>
> Is Prof. Whittle really intending to suggest that lots of us
> transition because we were bullied at school? Surely not?

If you read Prof Whittle MBE's disgraceful submission to the Commons committee on the Equality Bill[1] you see that he and PFC believe that there are almost no transsexual children (as in under-18s), and those there are (he terms us not trans girls but "sissyboys") are impossible to "diagnose" (seeing it from the gatekeepers' point of view). Thus he means (and says) that children who are not really transsexual are being pushed into a life of error.

This explains, of course, why PFC has always opposed any assistance for trans children (under-18s), and opposed them benefitting from the Gender Recognition Act. Also why PFC is incredibly hostile to those of us who were such children - its not just that our existence makes those who came to their realisation later (as did all PFC's leaders) feel they were slow, but they real don't believe us and reject us.

So much for another of PFC's "principles": that they always accept self-identity. THey don't even believe their own eyes and ears when it comes to us, who really obviously could never have been men.

Its good to know these lessons will take place, but still of concern that faith schools can teach it "in accordance with their beliefs". What exactly will that mean? Either you tell pupils bullying in all its forms is unacceptable or you make excuses for it, I suspect we all know which line such faith schools will take.

can you two get back to the point of this article. which is that kids are going to be taught that bullying people for their sexual orientation is not socially acceptable.

Has it occurred to anyone else that there are some kids who don't give a monkeys what is socially acceptable and who will use these lessons to learn ways to bully others they might not have thought of otherwise? It's a double edged sword.

Unfortunately political pragmatism leads to compromise. The House of Lords and Tories will not support anything without opt out for faith schools so that's always the rub isn't it - how to progress equality while ensuring it's passage through parliament. Point is it is not the authors of these measures who deserve a kicking, it's the forces who stand in the way and attempt to block it or mitigate it's power.

No Stewart. I am not hearing voices... yet. :)

But I can read between the lines and your comment, suggesting I should vote Tory and then see what how far we progressed, certainly implied that you regarded my criticism of this government's performance on LGBT issues as being out of place or in some way "ungrateful".

If that was not the implication, then I apologise.

I have no illusions that we well make much, if any, progress under the Tories, but equally I feel that while New Labour carry on pandering to the wishes of religious and social bigots, we are unlikely to gain much under this party either.

Christine are you hearing voices? I made no assertion that anyone should not criticise Labour, merely commenting that the probable Tories would not advance our equality one jot. I actually agree that there should be no opt out, but I at least give credit for advancing a GLBT agenda in the first place. Take a look at some of the Tory comments on these proposals to see where the real enemy is...

Stewart. Are you seriously saying no-one in the LGBT community should criticise the antics of this government, and the hollowness of it's stance on LGBT issues?

Just because the Tories would be worse is no reason we should have to put up with our betrayal by New Labour.

Whittle does seem to be giving the impression he thiks gender reassignment is a bad thing. I still don't GET the antipathy towards transgendered people as it is. This muddies the water even furthre.

Professor Stephen Whittle, president of trans group Press For Change, told Metro: "We welcome wholeheartedly this move. When children are stifled through bullying they are more likely to feel gender reassignment is their only option later in life."

Is Prof. Whittle really intending to suggest that lots of us transition because we were bullies at school? Surely not?

I think people need to look a bit closer at this.

Those opt-outs mean that many parents, usually the bigoted ones, will be allowed to take their kids out of such classes if they choose.

That means they will STILL be able to bring up their kids to hold such bigoted values, unchallenged.

Once again this government has allowed bigots a get-out clause from legislation which they claim is designed to protect the rights (and LIVES) of the LGBT community.

So much for prinicples.

They are NOT serious about LGBT Rights and Equality.

An excellent start, though why has it taken so long. Its all very well saying about how dreadful section 28 was but that was abolished some years ago. There's really no excuse for it to take this long. Lets hope it can help stop the violent act some children they feel they have the right to show gay and transgender people. Lets hope the powers that be don't pretend there's nothing they can do til after 2011.
